Ok, so a girl asked me to shave my goatee just to see how I would look. No big deal, right?? So I shaved it off because it'll grow right back in a week.
Sheesh. Apparently my chin does NOT like being shaved with a razor (even thought it was brand new 4 blade, flex head, etc. I even used shaving cream and after shave. It's broken out pretty badly and breaks out even worse each time I shave.
So I'm thinking to myself "I'm a ruggedly handsome individual who looked great for the first 4 hours. How do I keep this younger look but prevent the break out?"
Long story short (I know, too late), does anyone have recommmendations for electric razors?
Price isn't really a problem as long as it does a great job.
I have a Braun That works pretty good for me. I have had a few of the rotory types that just plain old suc ed. All in all I haven't found one yet that I would use everyday.
They just don't get close enough. Good luck on your quest.
I also could be the shaving cream that is causing problem. My new favorite shaving gel I actually found in the men's section. I have very sensitive skin and everything makes me break out. I highly recommend the Aveeno Therapeutic Shaving Gel. Not only does it leave my legs nice and smooth, no bumps, but I find that I have been needing to shave less. It doesn't have that nice girlie smell, and it costs a little more, but it's well worth it.
Also, a trick I learned from a spa is to exfoliate (scrub) the area first with a buffer, soap and warm to hot water. Rinse and pat dry, and then put the gel on to shave.
Don't shave any oftener than you have too. Forget the electric and shave with a blade in the shower just using soap. For aftershave, Witch Hazel works at least as good as anything else and costs a lot less. C'mon, it's time to man up!
This advice is coming to you courtesy of another "ruggedly handsome individual" and for more than four hours, too!
I have a full beard and shave it all off most summer's.. I kept the beard this year cuzz I became pretty tanned with it on, and cant shave without leaving a big mark where my beard would be.. lol)
I can tell you that your skin is alot more sensitive if you havent been scraping it with a razor for a while.. it does get tougher after a bit.. . Also, use cool water rather than hot to splash face before and after shaving... hot water can make irritation worse...
ok, the important question... Did your GF make it all worth it??!!
All the electric shavers I have used will irritate your face the first few times. Most of them pull the beard a bit which is what causes irritation.
In my experience you get used to a blade faster. Like the lady said, some shave creams irritate the skin. Try different ones or do like the other guy siad, shave in the shower, that way your beard is well moisturized and warmed up and you know the soap you use doesn't irritate you.
A fresh sharp blade gives the least irritation and make sure you have a nice even thin coating of soap etc on the skin and if you can wash you face really well first and let the foam sit on it for a bit. Hot water helps soften the beard.
Many jobs in the oilfield are like that. If there's even a REMOTE chance you MIGHT even THINK about putting on a SCBA mask, the whiskers come OFF. Period, end of story. I fought with two companies over this. One I won, (just barely) and the other, I got laid off.
My barber suggested Nair (or similar) if the irritation got to be too much of a problem.
I shave every third day on the moring of my shift. I use a single blade razor and shave cream. Then I use Mennen green aftershave. If I use a twin blade it makes me have little bumps and break out on my neck. On the other hand if I dont shave for a week or so my face gets to itching so bad I cant stand it, so I keep it shaved off. Growing up my dad had to shave every day if he didnt in three or four days he had a full beard. He always said he couldnt understand why anyone wanted to cultivate something around their mouth that grew wild around there back side.
Intrepidcub, I know exactly what you mean but this actually WAS my idea (or so she says...). It was just a joking suggestion I took seriously, much to my painful regret...
And just so people don't think less of me, I "manned up" for that second shave and it was not my idea of a good time.
Nair... as I understand it, basically eats the hair. If it's eating the hair then it's probably eating other things so I'll pass on that idea. The website says it should only be used once a week and does not slow the growth of hair. That means i'm scruffy for most of the week and back to square one. Bummer.
I kind of like not having the goatee so I'm going to try some of the suggestions. Scrubbing, shower shaving using the most therapeutic gel I can find, and then a healthy dose of topical novacaine to dull the ouchies. Man up indeed.
I can't use any of that hair remover like Nair. Makes my legs break out big time. I'm telling ya, that Aveeno stuff is one of the best I have used to far. I know leg hair is different from you guys facial hair. But I shaved Wednesday night, and my legs are just as smooth as the first day. And no bumps! I usually have to shave everyday for results like this.
