I've cleaned gas motors and knew the things to keep water out of, this is nmy first diesel. After seeing some of the pics of mods and these clean motors I want mine clean. It has 105,000 miles of gunk and stuff on the turbo and motor. Will a simple degreaser work or Simple Green. Also what should try and keep dry?
Just make sure you cover batteries, glow plug relay, power steering pump cover, alternator, and the wiring harnesses near the driver's side firewall. If you have an open element filter, cover that as well.
Do not pressure wash. Soak with Simple Green and hose off.
Why do you cover the batteries & alternator? Don't they get a good soaking when you drive through a bunch of water? Since I'm in Texas now, it's certainly an issue...

BTW, I also use SG -- works great!!
I thought about this too. I am always careful around those due to the acid. I don't splash a lot of water around there. I usually pull those and clean the box tray area with baking soda to nuetralize the acid.
