I'm seriously considering the purchase of a 99 Superduty Supercab Lariat F-250 with 159,000 miles. It is at a dealer. What should I look for and be concerned about before signing the dotted line? I haven't purchased a vehicle with this many miles since I was a kid...I'm a bit nervous about the miles.
This is a great place to start. Wish I had read this post and joined FTE before I bought my truck cause I probably would have ended up with a much better truck than I got. But that's all water under the bridge now. If I were to do it all over again I'd spend a ton of time looking to find the lowest milage 2003 with a 7.3 I could, have my mechanic go over it with a fine tooth comb, buy it and then start moding.
A friend told me to check the turbo fins and for play in the shaft. Are turbos much of an issue with this amount of mileage?
Probably my biggest concern is the Transmission. Outside of driving it, checking the fluid color and checking for leaks is there anything else I can do on the dealers lot?

If its at a FORD dealer then ask for an OASIS report, post back reults here and we can help you decipher it. An OASIS report is a warranty or dealer service history report, since the PSD was warrantied for 100k most all drivetrain fixes will show up here. this way you will know what has or has not been repaired on the motor and tranny.
[QUOTE=The Grand Pooh-Bah]Is this better than a carfax report?[/QUOTE
much better then a car fax...also look at the build date any thing built before 12/98 is an early 99...smaller turbo,HPOP and injectors...if you are looking to mod this truck..the 99.5 already has the bigger turbo hpop and injectors....good luck and have fun with your new ride..

It was manufactured 3/98 sold on 4/98
Noticed you did some upgrades on you early 99....did something break or were these improvements?
You can always upgrade the turbo later if you want. The good thing about the early 99's is they have forged rods where the newer ones do not. If you are serious about this truck, it is worth a few bucks to get a reputable diesel mechanic to look over it. If you can find someone to do an OASIS report just add that to your mechanic report and you can have a little more piece of mind. Good luck and what ever you get you'll love it.....
By the way I have 103,000 on mine now and with the history that my truck had, I would not have hesitated buying it with a 159,000 on it.....
By the way #2, I'll bet you, like mine, Ron's is all performance upgrades because of the dreaded disease of "PMS". (Powerstroke Modification Syndrome) Yes you too will be infected.....

240k miles here and still on the original tranny. most mods are done to "keep up with the joneses " we all know that the duramax, cummins, 6.0PSD, and 6.4PSD's are all faster than the 7.3, and the 7.3 is considered old technology, but, it is pretty easy to modify, not terribly hard to repair( once you understand the basics), and can make all the power most of us need to pull anything we want.
with my higher miles I would not hesitate to jump in the truck, hook up my 5th wheel and drive cross country.

get the VIN, go to a FORD dealer and ask a service person to print it out-FREE
ask the dealer you are buying truck from for a CAR FAX report, they may have already done it, if not, just ask. they may charge you for it, $20
I bought my 02 F-350 two years ago, the FORD dealer gave me it for FREE
I paid $26,000 for mine with 79K miles, Supercab Lariat 4x4 longbed SRW
MAKE SURE YOU take it to a reputable DIESEL mechanic for a close inspection before you buy it.
I got mine for a weekend test-drive, had it looked at by a friend, diesel specialist and he gave it a thumbs up! I am still happy as hell I got it!!!
I got an early 99 and love it. Pooh bah I'm sure you'll like yours too. Check out my mods- not enough to win at the track, but it'll make you **** your pants laughing at the guys you **** off driving the foreign jobs, as you blow them away with a 8,000 pound truck LOL
Bdrummonds- 240k on the Original tranny? Jeez! must be nice- mine went at 155k. Cost $3000 to rebuild it.....
