2000 EX, 7.3 PSD Automatic trans, ~110,000 miles. I just put the NAPA 6637 air filter on last night. That is the only mod that has been done. I included this info because as soon as I did the filter I get this noise. Not sure if it is related.
Problem: This just started today. When the truck is driven regular to a little heavy on the throttle it makes a hissing noise for about a second after every shift. It does not do it as bad if I am not in the throttle as hard. The noise sounds like it is coming from around the pedal area.
Please help since we are going on a long trip for about a week starting this Friday.
I also posted this in the '99-'03 7.3 diesel forum but I know you guys here are very good at fixin' stuff and I need some advice fast. Is this serious or not?
Sounds to me like it might be your turbo. Sometiems if you are over spinning the turbo they will make that noise. Dont think it really hurts it but i bet thats the noise you are hearing.
i have the open element filter and the only time i hear the turbo is when i step on it hard. when i go from steady pedal then stand on it, i hear the turbo spool up then a slight whistling, and then a quite loud whistling, which i love to hear. other than that i can hear the turbo from the exhaust a little bit when i'm going slow.
I can hear my turbo on the 97 very well but the noise on the EX scared me since we are getting ready to put about 1000 miles on it next week. I thought it might be the turbo between shifts but wasn't sure since it sounded like hydraulic pressure going thru a valve or high pressure air releasing. Thanks guys you eased my mind. BTW the filter was one of the easiest mods I have ever done. Thanx again.
Also I am used to driving a stick and not used the sounds from an auto. Sorry for freaking out.

Yep perfectly normal with the open element filter! you will learn to love that sound. It sounds really awesome when I am full throttle up the sand dune then let out quick right at the top to avoid any air time. Talk about an awesome noise! One of these days it will snap my turbo shaft but oh well!
All of what they said plus you have a waste gate on the 2000 so when you let off, the excess turbo pressure releases providing faster despool (is that a word?) time. So you will notice a more pronounced his with the newer turbo because of the waste gate.
I have heard of a waste gate but not sure what it is. I understand what it does but I need to study up on this. I imagine it is somewhere near the turbo and has hoses going to it that connect to the intake boot. Just a guess.
A waste gate is a device that takes exhuast gases (drive pressure) from the inlet of the turbo and vents it right to the outlet of the turbo rather than letting it do through the turbo to drive the turbo. It is used to regulate exhuast backpressure and to keep boost under control. So it pretty much just bypass' the exhuast fromt he up-pipe to the downpipe bypassing the exhuast side of the turbo. There are alos external wastegates that vent the exhuast right to the engine compartment rather than the exhuast pipe. Many HiPo trucks use externals. Sometime you will see then on a dyno and have black exhuast coming from the exhuast pipe and the engine compartment. thats the external wastegate.
On your EX the waste gate is controlled by that goldish color thing bolted to the top back side of the turbo with the vacum type line running to it and the rod goes to the arm of the internal wastegate int he exhaust housing.
Kool that is what I thought. It has the vacuum lines attached and one goes to the intake boot that we put on our OBS and had to plug. I would imagine with this you wouldn't have to worry about BP if you modded the EBPV to make it a brake. It should release before it got to 45 or whatever pressure blows the heads.

no thats still an issue even with a wastegate cause the exhuast doesn't bypass the EBPV. it just puts it past the turbine wheel but before the valve
