Tranny Cooler

Does anyone know the size (deminisions) of the stock tranny cooler. I'm thinking about adding a "on demand" cooling fan. I'd go out and measure, but I didn't drive it to work today.

Thanks.

I don't know the dimensions of the cooler...

What I can report is that the stock cooling fan is a heck of a fan on my 2005!

Last year while tugging my 7500# TT up Powder River and Togwotee passes (~9700')...the cooling fan came on...it normally does NOT come on and let me tell you I am GLAD it doesn't...that thing is LOUD when it kicks in...it also did a fine job of keeping temps at bay in summer temps with both A/C units running full bore...

DO you have cooling issues you are trying to solve? Perhaps a good radiator system flush is all that is needed?...Thankfully with all the towing I do behind my Ex in the summer months up some good grades...the factory cooling system on this thing has not disappointed me yet...

I not looking to replace the current cooling fan - I'm just going to add a small (10-12 inch) aux elect fan to the tranny cooler itself. I've noticed in slow traffic and when manipulating in to a camping spot, that the tranny can get rather warm (not exceedingly hot, yet). So I though I could, inexpensively, add a aux cooling fan with a switch - then slimply flip it on when needed. Mainly for the times when the air flow thru the cooler is reduced.

Oh...got you...not a bad idea...

I've seen those out there...thankfully so far...mine has been okay...but I like your thinking...I would think the main fan would kick on at some point though? and when it does...look out! LOL

If you pull the rubber cover off the front of the engine so you can look down low at the bottom/front of the radiator, you can see the stock trans cooler. It's a long and narrow (about 4 inches by 20 inches) so I expect a fan will have a hard time drawing air over the entire surface.

I ended up adding an aftermarket cooler that works very well. I can't remember the brand name (it was a major manufacturer) but it was a simple install and has lowered my overall temps 25-30 degrees. The aftermarket cooler is a stacked-plate design which is much more efficient than the factory "fins around a tube" design.

The cooler cost about $50 at a Checker Autoparts store.

The next thing I'd like to do is add dual electric fans behind the radiator. The factory fan is such a power hog and probably hurts mpg a little.
