9 inch gear ratio

I got a 9 inch rear the right width for my 54 panel. The tag is rusted off,so how do I determine the gear ratio? The yoke turns 2.10 times for each turn of the axel.Is this the gear ratio?

I believe 9 inchers did not come with ratios less than 2.8:1.

3.00:1 is the most common.

Ford 9 Inch

A 2.75-1 ratio was introduced in 1967 (44/16), and a 2.47-1 ratio was added in 1978 (47/19).

If it is not limited slip you need someone to help you.

Mark the wheels both in same spot i usually use both valve stems at 6 oclock posotion and mark the driveshaft at the yoke, both of you have to turn the wheels at the same speed then count the revolution at the yoke. (make one turn of the wheels) This will be your gear ratio.

I have herd that if you lock one wheel and turn the other 2 revolutions and count the at the yoke that this will give you the gear ratio, but i have not tried it yet.

Hope this helps

Me thinks it's 2 revs of the wheels and count the revs of the yoke.

Turn both wheels one rev and count the revs on the yoke, lock one wheel and turn the other wheel 2 revs and count the revs at the yoke.

Its best to have 2 people.

When you turn the wheels one time and the driveshaft turns 3.5 turns then you have 3.50:1 gear ratio

3:50 to one ratio is one rev of the tires to 3.5 of the driveshaft.

Yep, I agree. If it's a regular open rear end (Note posi) then clamp one side. Turn the other two turns and count the revs on the yoke. Four and a quarter turns is 4.25:1 Jag

thanks

Thanks guys.It looks like I have a 3;50 gear.I would like a 3;25 would it be worth looking or will the 350 give reasonable driveability with a 351 w and c6.also are all carriers the same if I found a 3;25 could I just use the hold carreier?

This was discussed in another thread about two weeks ago.

Depends on a lot of things but mostly on your stall speed (if it's really loose), tire height, and the type of driving you do. I love 3.50s around town but, if you have a tach (or an ear) it's really all about how much you want to spin the engine. If you get out on the Highway much with a 26" tire, you might not like your gas mileage.

I personally like to keep the sustained revs below 2800 on an engine with a stock bottom end. I'm not right, just my knucklehead opinion.

Another knucklehead opinion is that gear sets and carriers are pricey. I would not spend $400 bones (fresh parts) to change between 3.50 and 3.25. I ran a 3.00 Spooler out of a boneyard F-150 and the a limited slip 3.50 when I was racing.

Hope this is helpful

No all carriers are not the same as for as axle spline count, you will need to pull your axles to find out how many splines are on the end, other than that it is a bolt in.

I think the number of splines is 28 or 31.

If you go that rought stay in 70's eara rearends, i think in the 60's some big ford cars had a 9and3/8" rear which look the same.
