Question reassembly

o.k another lame flatty question . i got my parts from dennis carpenter but have had no time yet , and i ran into one of those head scratching deals . how in the world do you get the retaining clips on the guides ? you obviously have to pull them down to do so but as a flatty rookie no clue . oh and i'm doing the repairs in the truck so if you tell me i have to remove it you gonna depress me . then i'll have to take it all apart and buy the wish list of goodies and go 3/8 x 3/8 etc. ...

Hi 55f350
Check out this link. it looks like you can do it it in your truck with a few specialty tools.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly that has actual working knowledge instead of theoretical.

The horseshoe clips that hold the guide in the block? If everything is clean they should slide in place.

Unless you assembled the guide/valve/spring/keepers before you dropped them in. In this case you need the valve assembly pry bar to pull down on the spring until you can get the clip in. The valve on the seat is holding it up too high by the spring pressure. Does that make sense?

Might need three hands. I usually assemble the valve/guide/spring in the valve chest, but that presents its own set of issues. Hint - a little grease on the keepers will help hold them in place........ and takes a long reach valve spring compresser. Plug all the holes where a keeper can fall into the crank case and keep needle nose pliers handy as well as a good light!

I wouldn't argue with buying a pry bar (official tool) but any number of long screwdrivers, tire irons, or bent flat stock will do the trick. I mostly used a 2'-long angled pry bar/screwdriver from China's Outlet Store (Harbor Frieght) that cost $5. Different shape/length of tools work best on different valves, just because of where they fall in relation to the intake ports you pry against.

I've also done it MT's way, with an OHV spring compressor. He's right on, you need nimble fingers and good lighting. If everything is clean and lubed, it goes fast. Remember, on the assembly line, they put them all in, in less than a minute!!
