Received my kit yesterday, right after my battery light came on...
So I replaced my alternator with a new Duralast Gold lifetime warranty unit form AutoZoo, then installed the new lights. Man, the truck looks SWEET with the 8000Ks in there!! I took a couple pics, but they're not great.
Something's kind of weird with them though. Seems like my truck just started shutting itself off after I installed them. I'll keep an eye on it, but the first time it was exactly when I flipped the lights on. The second time, they were already on. I'm not sure if the power supplies for these are noisy causing the PCM to freak out occasionally or what. When they first turn on, they come really bright for a split second, then go to their normal brightness. I guess it could be another coincidence and my CPS could be starting to go, but that would just be wrong...
Alternator dies the day the HIDs came in, then CPS the next day (after HID installation)??? I'll keep an eye on it, but has anyone with this kit seen the truck act up after installation?
They're bright enough that you dont' need high beams!! However, they said they're coming out with a solution for that soon -- I just didn't feel like waiting. Next, I'll add some fogs with the HIDs as well...
Careful with those Izzy, ive heard that if you run HID lights on vehicles that dont come from the factory with them, they can fine the @!#@ out of you. Something with the angle and projection or somethin.
That's why I didn't go with the really blue ones. These are blue-white, so hopefully they'll just look like the upgraded regular bulbs. Of course, now I have to either put the stock bulbs back in for the safety inspection or go back to my buddy that works at an inspection station.
Nice to have "buddies", those things are really awesome in the snow, if youve ever had the chance to see them in action, when they first came out we put aftermarket ones on the top my snowcat at the resort i worked for. You can see for miles in the snow with those things.
Did some more research on the HID power supply & igniter, and the bright flash as they power up is normal. Turns out they have a high voltage spike (like 20kV) at the start to get the arc going, then the voltage drops way down (like 1kV) to maintain the arc. I'll bet that burst to light them is REALLY noisy, RF-wise, which could affect the PCM. I'm going to try putting some RF suppression toroids on the power leads going to the supplies and see what happens.
And I did do some research on the legality of these, and Benny is 100% correct -- they're not legal on vehicles that didn't come from the factory. However, since I got the white with slight blue tint, I think I'll be okay. There were a couple posts I saw from law enforcement officers that said they don't normally go after these unless they're really obnoxious or really off color (like deep blue or purple). I probably would have went with the pure white ones (6000Ks) had I read that before, but these aren't too bad. The 10000Ks are deep blue, so I'd recommend staying away from those...
8000K its a blue bulb Izzy, the BMW AUDI and Mercedes the bulbs that are shipped with them are 4100-4500K , and the reason that they look blue from certain angle is cause they have cut off shield so when the light hits the edge of it it creates prizm efect and you see the blue light , on the other hand they get blue BUT with the time , the older they get more blue they are, ALL HID lights, so your 8000 wil get blue very soon, i hope you aware of it,
if i ever out them in my truck ill use D2S bulbs and Hella or Bosh ballasts,
Thanks, Pete. If I have to replace them because they get "too blue", I'll put in the 6000K bulbs instead. The 6000Ks are pure white, the 5000Ks are "factory", whatever that means. At least on that site...
yeah Alkim, those are 14000K the POS knockofs,, there is no substitute for true Bi-Xenon projectors, they use one bulb but use flap that opens and closes to give more light, this is the cutoff shield i was talking about earlyer . please guys dont waist your money on those ,
if i would be a COP i would pull over any idiot with those Blue bulbs and give them 1000$ ticket minimum!!!!!!!!!! they just blind oncoming trafic and dont help the driver see the road better either, blue light makes you see less, White light will make you see better, so the closer the light spectrum is to the SUN spectrum you will see better,
Get the real thing or dont waist your money, spend them on better mods,
