I recently ran my truck with the fuel switch out of the molex connection. It ran fine. I'm wondering if it just defaults to the currently switched position when removed. Anyone know?
The Fuel selector valve will remain latched in the last selected position. Each of the two positions selects a fuel tank and lines that tanks supply and return up with the engine. The supply line runs from the selector valve to the High Pressure Pump and check valve and then on to the fuel filter (unless you have your fuel filter inside the selector valve).
It will run OK this way until the fuel in the tank gets down to about a 1/4 tank or you go up a hill.
I know that in the 90 and later ... it doesn't run without the switch installed. Our fuel system is different from your 87, we have a high pressure pump in each tank and none on the framerail.
Thanks for the infor & schematics. I forgot to put it in & it ran fine for the hour that I was out. I will put it back on though. I really want to get rid of the rear tank. I dont want to spend the money fixing whatever is wrong. Looking at the schematic I just need to eliminate the Y/LB & the BR/W supply wires & cut the grounds. If I did that then removed & capped the fuel supply & return lines at the mechanical selector valve reservoir, then that should be all there is to it. The only problem would be if the selector switch was in pushed to the rear tank position & you didnt know it. I'd be out of gas. The only way around that would be to find a single gas tank truck & rob its parts. How does that sound. Thanks Again Todd.
