Assembly Drawings

Hi,

We just tood our 41 ford truck out of our barn and I have been working on the fenders. I have the fenders done and we want to start putting the front end together. We have cab full of parts and arent exactly sure of how everything fits together. Im looking for some kind of assembly drawing of how every thing goes together. Does anybody know of any drawing I could look at or where I could find one. Thank you.

Assembly drawings

Hi,

I had the same problem because I bought my truck as a basketcase.
I asked the same question on this forum, got no answer, probably because there ain't such a book or other source.

So I mostly relied on on parts dravings in catalogs from Bob Drake, Dennis Carpenter and others.

Make shure you have all the needed hardware, bolts ,rubber, fender welt and so on.

Basically you will have to start with the inner fenders (aprons).
The fenders themselves are hooked over the inner fenders.
At the height of the firewall both the inner and outer fenders are attached to the body with a small upper fender brace (sort of an angled piece).
Special flat headed bolts (4 per side) join the inner and outer fenders in the aera where they meet the hood.
The grille is sandwitched between the fenders, easy, and to the rear the fenders are attached to the running boards.
The hood comes on top, and the bumper attaches trough the holes in the fenders to the frame.

Adjusting of the whole setup starts from the top, first align the height of the hood towards the body, get even gaps around. Then aim for an even gap between the lower part of the hood and the fenders. Also the grille center needs to be aligned with the centerline of the hood and the cab.
The the grille needs to be moved up or down in order to obtain an even gap between the front side of the hood and the grille.

This means that you cant torque the attachment bolts down as you proceed, you will most likely have tweak the parts, file holes larger to move fenders up or down at the front or/and the back.
You might also have to bend the inner fenders left or right, rise or lower them, add shims and washers.....

If it looks OK, (it took us 3 evening sessions to get a satisfactory result) the lower brace panels between the rear inner part of the fenders and the body can be added.

Of course a dry assembly with the unpainted parts should have been made before the final assembly.
The process is not easy, you will need time, especially if the parts have been reworked, straightend, welded , beaten and so forth.

If you have parts that you can't identify post a picture (create a gallery) and we try to identify the part and tell you where goes and what it does.

So far..

Hope this helps.

Greetings from Luxembourg.

I'm no expert, however try and take in some classic car and truck shows. Right now there are a lot of them going on. Look for some examples of trucks like yours, if you have a digital camera take some pictures under the hood. Most owners don't mind you sticking your head under an open hood and snaping a few pictures as long as you don't touch the paint. Talk to the owners, believe me they love showing off their trucks. This may not be much help if you don't have access to classic shows, It really helped me.

Hey thanks for replies, started digging through the cab and sorting parts and it looks like we don't have the small front fender braces, fender brace panels, outer grille air deflector plates, and the radiator grille pan. Looks like all of those pieces are available from catologs. If you have any other ideas were still looking for sketches of the whole assembly.

This might be too little too late but I hope it can help. I have '48-50 trucks so I don't usually hang out around here.

Here's a diagram from the Van Pelt web site:
