I was with TNT today for lunch and we were talking bout hubs.. I'm yanking mine for Warn.. But he has the auto's.. I was checking his ***** and they are EXTREMELY tight to turn.. They were turned clockwise into Locked.. I checked his Knuckle and his Shaft.. Either position and it turns.. I thought that the Knuckles were disconnected when the hub wasn't locked?
Well I keep my truck in "Auto" all the time but every once in a while I turn the hubs to lock and then back to auto just too prevent my hubs from getting hard to turn. Anyways When I turn the axle near the hub it turns freely on both sides and also turns the t-case axle too, Now isnt that the way it works until you lock your hubs and then you shouldnt get any movement from the front axel right?
If the hubs are locked (and the wheel is not off the ground) you should not be able to turn the axle shaft/steering knuckle. It should be locked to the wheel.
With both sides in Auto (and the ESOF **** in 4x2), you should be able to turn the driveshaft and axles.
Do this, in this order:
1) Turn both front hubs to LOCK.
2) Try to turn the front driveshaft by hand. If it moves, one of your hubs isn't locking - while spinning the driveshaft, if should be obvious which axle is turning, that's your bad hub.
3) Turn both front hubs to AUTO/UNLOCK.
4) Spin driveshaft again. It should spin freely. HOWEVER - also check that BOTH axles are spinning freely too. The driveshaft can spin free with only one hub unlocked.
The above assumes that the transfer case is not stuck in 4x4
When you turn the hubs to AUTO/UNLOCK, and you seem to have a hub that's still locked, it could be the axle stub locking up inside the "inner spindle bearing" - the needle bearing inside the wheel bearing where the axle stub rides.
Thanks guys... Just what I needed to hear.. I'll let TNT know and we'll do some more checking.. His hubs were turned Clockwise when I checked them.. Said its been like that for months.. So I'm thinking his needle bearings may be shot now and his front end is actually locked..
I think my drivers side is the same but I have manual hubs..
