I noticed little better throttle.. Less boost needed to haul hyde.. With my throttle valve in place (I have a fully functional one), I was having to hit 30-32lbs of Boost to move pretty fast.. After removing it, took only 25lbs of Boost to accomplish the same take off.. Again I had a fully functional valve, butterfly and all.. I just yanked it all out and called it a day..
So, what is the best thing to do if you have an 04 that actually has the pins in the throttle body plug? Do you have to go with the 04 elbow or is there a way to get rid of the unessential stuff and use the 05 elbow?
a item like this that requires so little torque to tighten down i would do by hand....I only use torque wrenches on HG'S and all internal components. And i wouldnt rent one either due to the fact of people's carelesness. once they are dropped they need to be re-calibrated.
I agree with this guy. Worried about torque on a bolt that small? Heck just get it tight and it will be fine.
elee3. I have an 04 and have the pins in the plate. I took off the elbow and figured I could clean it up and "flow" out the rough edges. The main place I worked on was the sharp side low side edge. Took about an hour with a die grinder and deburing tool. Cleaned it up with emory cloth. Polished it with a cotton ball polisher I had from doing an intake a few years ago.
It's really hard to feel a change but I do feel the milage went up especially when towing. I check every tank and get over 15 in town, right at 20 on the road and 12 towing a #7000 trailer @ 65-70 mph. No hop ups and Gibson Extreme duals. At 30k I changed to synthetic from dino and that helped too. Good Luck
Thanks jimmy-six. After looking at the elbow offered by DFUser, I think I'm going to try my hand at making one. I'm lucky enough to have access to a machine shop, some nice TIG welding equipment, and lots of stainless and aluminum scraps. I'll let you know how it turns out.
That would have been my first choice also. I thought about doing that very thing. I would have needed to get the metal but the machining and welding would have been done at work. For me an hour of my time was the easiest and cost nothing. With the plate still under the elbow it will still be pretty sharp but anything we do would be better than stock. I seems dumb to me why Ford would "square" everything up but apparently the engineers and bean counters found it to be a 1/2 cent cheaper per unit and Ford naturally went for it. Hey the turbo will blow thru anything but smooth has always been better...Good Luck
If your welding your own.. Get some stronger pipe.. The company that makes the one out of Exhaust Pipe cratered on me.. Reason I went to an Accufab Elbow.. It was $15.00 more then the other one and it's cast..
We're still not sure how it fell apart.. I found burn marks and heavy indentions from the Fire Blanket.. It wasn't pretty..
I second the cast accufab. I have one I think is an intakeelbow brand and it's about as thick as a beer can. I was very careful not to crush it with the CAC tube clamp when I put the hose on. I haven't noticed a bit of difference in performance, boost, or mileage with mine. I definitely haven't lost any boost or had any codes pop up tho.

Thats the one I had! Keep an eye on it.. Mine cratered on me after a few months.. Looked like someone took a steel pipe and hit the top of it and let it bend down.. It wasn't really pretty Somehow that fire blanket ate through the aluminum..
I saved all my factory parts and pieces. I'll be porting and polishing it for when the freebie goes to pot. I can't see that it does squat anyway. You can only push so much air through so big of a hole anyway, with the intake manifold being the limitation.
I put the 04 elbow on and didn't notice any difference. No mileage gain, no power gain, it does look good though. I have also been to the shop since installation and nothing was said about the mod.
I have noticed a slight better MPG and faster Spooling. Any mods are a plus when you add them up together. If you only install the elbow you will not see any difference.
