I don;t have the owners manual and can't read thru the rust on the dipstick to tell which type of tranny fluid to use in my 88 F250 with the 7.3L and C6.. Also does anybody know how many quarts of oil this beast takes???
Use to be Fords took type F tranny fluid, then I also had a Ford escort that took dexron 2.....I think they also make a combo dexron/mercon.....I don't have any leaks but just want to get a quart so as to have on hand....

Do not mix transmission fluids, if in doubt drain, flush and refill.
I use RedLine D4 ATF in my '94 F250 with C6. It's a tough fluid that will take loads of heat. I had a 1990 F250 4x4 with 7.3 diesel and E4OD junkamatic. Due to a design flaw in the transmission at that time, the torque converter clutch slipped constantly and insufficient hydraulic pressure for the overdrive clutch, resulting in the transmission overheating. I never realized I had a problem because the fluid never burned! It was just as pink and clear as ever when I would check the fluid level. The Ford dealer was amazed that I got over 55,000 miles on the transmission, because most were metal hamburger by 25,000 miles. I use it in all my vehicles by the way. Only use the D4! Pass on the Hi Temp, Racing and C+ types, as they will not have good low temperature properties. While you are at it, don't forget to change the little rubber hose that connects the oil cooler line near the radiator if you have one. Before replacing it, I use it to gently blow compressed air into, to flush the torque converter and cooler systems. Bump the engine over till you find the torque converter drain bolt, and remove it first. Temporarily replace the drain pan when you do this so that you do not make a big mess.
Nice chart subford. I'm borrowing your link to post it on a crown victoria BB (crownvic.net). I hope you don't mind. I was always curious what year 4R70w could be filled with MV.
