I've got that wonderful, irritating whine in the rear end (not a LS as far as I know) on my '02 XLS... I've seen the TSB where they've come up with a rear end repair kit (I guess new ring and pinion)... how hard is this job to do right, and what have you guys paid to get this done? I've had the rear end lube changed to the synthetic now specified for these in that TSB, the noise simply changed pitch, and now it really irritates me. I'm not looking to do this myself, just want a ballpark and other's experiences with this. If I can't fix it, I'm going to have to dump the truck, it's going to drive me nuts.
Shop around for a good rear end/transmission shop or performance shop and get your entire rear end rebuilt. New wheel bearings, carrier and pinion bearings, new races, etc. Pick up a set of NEW Ford Racing gears for your 8.8 and have them put it in. I bought my install kit from Summit Racing which came with everything to overhaul the entire rear end. Now would be an excellent time to put in a limited slip carrier if you are having the gears replaced.
MisterCMK, about how much did you pay for yours (if you had it done)... this thing is paid for, but I'm debating on whether to dump it or fix it---if the fix will be more or less permanent (and from what I've seen on the forums, it's hit or miss, but I have a feeling that may have more to do with the skill of the tech fixing it) and not outrageously expensive, I'll keep it, otherwise, it's gone.
remember the axlw whine happens normally at 55-65 mph, and backs off s soon as you take your foot off the throttle. if you have a constante growel at various speeds, you may be talking about a rear wheel bearing/ hub. that is not uncommon either
I did mine myself but I would not recommend doing it yourself unless you have the knowledge and tools to do the job.
Even if you have a non limited slip rear end now would be the time to put a LS carrier in as you will be replacing the gears anyway.
My costs for gear swap and rebuild
3.73 Yukon gears - FREE brand new due to my amazing negotiating skills
Full gear install kit - $130
Trac-Lok Rebuild - $50
Oil, modifier, etc - $30
If you find a good shop in your area it should only be $200 or so to have gears installed. A little more if you need new races, seals, and the trac-lok put in. I would say that the whole thing can be done for under $700.
