I have a 99 psd that has been to the dealer twice for an oil residue on the turbo which is spreading to the hood insulation and the top of the engine.
They've told me that the TSB on this says "a small amount of mist on the turbo is normal". To me, that's like saying you're a little bit pregnant. On an engine with 60k on it, I should NOT have a leak. Nothing ever shows up underneath, but this is really starting to irritate me. Any tips or clues on unknown TSB's so I can get this taken care of?
Any other forum members experiencing this?
They've replaced some sort of clamps once and it went away for a while, or it may have just taken longer to come back, I'm not for sure.
The TSB is right, there is allowed a little residue on the turbo or around the clamps, but what you are describing is not acceptable, there sould be no oil mist on the hood insulation. Check all the fittings and also check the oil supply line and make sure it is not leaking around the fittings. Some other PSD owners will help you out more, I don't own one but I have worked on a few.
Find yourself another ford dealer, and get it fixed soon so you minimize the chance of sucking in unfiltered air if it is the clamps.
The oil in the turbo is coming from your crankcase vent. If you look at your drivers side valve cover, you'll see the vent tube coming right in to the intake hose for the turbo upstream from the filter.
If you've got oil mist on top of the engine, check the intake hoses for tightness.
Also, check around the bottom of the intercooler, and the intercooler pipes, I'll bet you find some oil there too.
I saw a post on another site awhile back where a guy modified his crankcase set-up to vent pre-filter. If I can find the link again, I'll post it here.
