I have a 94 Explorer with a sagging upper hinge on the drivers side. If I cut the old pin off with my dremel tool will I have to remove the hinge to drive the old pin out? It would be much easier if I can do it while attached to the door. I figured one of you guys have had experience with this. Thanks, JT
It really depends on how much room you have. If you think you can drive the pin out while mounted, you will need a friend or two hold the door up while the pin is out. I would be easier to do it while the hindge is out, but you could save that for a last ditch effort.
I did the same thing to my 94. I took the door off and went to ford to get the hinge ($75 i think). Bad Move. The Ford hinge comes complete and you must get the hinge off the truck (I unbolded the door from the hinge first). This is really difficult because 1 or 2 of the bolts must be turned from inside the cab.
Anyway... since my door was off anyway, I cut my hinge pin with a hacksaw blade and put it back together using the $5 aftermarket kits from napa/az/pep/whatever. That was easy since the door was off, but I think it could be done with the door on as well. As I recall, it was a couple of busings and a long pin. pretty easy to install.
you MUST get a friend to help and put blocks under the door BEFORE you remove the pin. The door is very heavy and difficult to manuver by yourself. I had removed the hinge, so I spent some time re-aligning the door.
I'd also do both top and bottom hinges. Then sit in your driveway opening and closing the door so all the neighbors will be envious.
