An extra gear would be handy....

Just thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone knew of a solution-

On my last truck (F-250, 7.3L, 3.73 ratio) I could very easily cruise the highway
at 70 to 75 mph without feeling as though I was really driving hard.

Since I traded that truck on my current truck (F-350 7.3L 4.10 ratio), it runs great, but it is happiest on the highway at about 62-65 mph--- trying to keep it at 70 mph really seems like you are just burning tons of fuel with the rpm's high just to keep it going an extra 5-7mph.

Of course, I understand that the 4.10 ratio gears are dictating this, but has anyone done anything to "add an extra gear" that would allow for a little happier highway cruising?

I'm sure I didn't phrase this correctly but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Gear Venders makes an overdrive unit that would help. I don't know if they are anygood or not. There is another company that makes one too, US Gear I think

They're a bit pricey, but if you do a lot of highway driving, I'm sure it would pay for itself in fuel savings. I have 3.73s and have no problem running 80ish, but I definitely notice better mileage at 70 or so. We're talking ~2000 RPMs at 70 and like 2300 at 80 or 85 with my gearing...

Yep, I looked that up....and you're right, I think that would hdo the trick. However, Izzy, you are correct about this- dang, thats expensive!

Don't know that I can pony up that kind of change...... I may just have to burn through some diesel.

P.S. dc2842002.......How's the Fort doing? I lived there for a while when I was at CSU...I miss that town and being on the front range every day.

you could always go for a taller tire next time. but then that would change your gearing all around. and not just for OD.
