I just read that Mocky thing. Some things he said we true others were not. First off I am a DIE HARD Ford fan. But there is one thing many 302's can not do and one is beat a Camaro with a 350 in it. I have a friend with a 302 mustang with a 5 spd, also have friends with Chevy's and Trans Ams, I dont even advice him to race either car, they will rip him to pieces. (he doesn't know how to drive a 5spd right anyways)
As for a pickup 302 beating a car it is possible. I have a stock 302 in my pickup, only thing done is Fram filters, and cat back exhaust. I have 3:55 limited slip, there is not a car that can keep up off the line (other than the 2 cars above which are modified up the ying yang) I just recently raced a brand spankin new Stang with a 4.6 and beat it up to 85 mph then my pickup lost its get up an go. Wind resistance and weight.
But there is one thing I would like to do to my 302 is a cam. Any recommendations?
Oh by the way my friend with the 5.0 stang with 5 spd, I beat him by a car length in the 1/4 mile. He smoked 'em and doesn't know how to drive.
What year is your truck with the 302? my friend has an 86 with a 302, headers, exhaust, and the stock 3.08's. his truck is fast, but not THAT fast...he was thinking of putting some lower gears in it. i know its supposed to help but how much? you didnt do anything else to it to make it so fast? (by the way did the truck come with the 3.55's or did u put them in...i would be curious as to how much that helped performance.) oh also is your truck a manual or auto? thanks
My pickup is a '92. It is all factory (that I know of). I have put on 31.10.50.15 Good Year Workhorse Radials (Really aggresive) and a Tach and an Exhaust. No headers on it yet, haven't had that much cash. The 3:55's are stock. As for performance between 3:08's and the 3:55's it is really no comparison. WE have a '91 with 3:08's and a 5 spd (mine is auto) and it just can't keep up with my pickup. Something else that might help is a K&N air filter, I have not done this yet either. I would also like to install a cam.
Let's be reasonable people, a (stock?)5.0 or 4.6 with 225 hp is not going to beat a stock 350 with between 300 and 350 hp, unless the guy is a terrible driver. You say the 350 's are modified up the ying-yang no competition from a Mustang there. But let's level the playing field put in a stroker or even just a well built 5.0 with a super charger and then let's run'em. BIG difference. When Ford brought out the 5.0 Mustang (in it's glory years) '85 up it couldn't be touched by the General and he had an equal displacement 305 to beat the 5.0 they had to up it to a 350. The other thing is Quality..ride in two identically well taken care cars with close to the same mileage, one Camaro one Mustang and see which one rides the best and rattles, squeeks, bangs the least. I know the answer and it ain't a GM. I could go on and on about High mileage Mustangs and other Fords I've seen but it won't matter if a person likes GM's that's probably what they'll stay with unless they are open minded. Besides it doesn't matter if it has tires on it it'll probably give you trouble at one time or another.
Talk about high mileage, my brother has an '82 Mustang 302v8 with 178,000 that runs great. With nitrous he beat a 340 Duster at the drag strip. He got it down to about the mid 14 second quarter. And Mustangs didn't get really fast until about '84 or '85! My brother's Mustang puts out stock with just a pulley set and dual custom exhaust but stock manifolds 290 torque at 3500 and 228 hp at 4500; but with nitrous its 422 torque at 2500 and 300 hp at 4500.
If you have a 350 in a camaro or firebird why don't you try running a 2000 Cobra R that has the same size engine you do!!!! or are you afraaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiddddd!!!! that Cobra will run the a$$ off of you chevy I have a friend who has all kinds of chevy stuff he says he can build 3 chevies for what it cost to build a ford but it works out even because they blow up 3 to 1 too.

I am trying to keep quiet, but this "fordsajoke" guy is in the wrong message board. He probably has a GM family and is really crying out for help. Anyway, I have personally witnessed new model Camaros and Fireturds at the dragstrip have trouble with new Mustangs. My best friend bought a 96 Formula 6 speed just to beat my old warhorse 91 GT Mustang 5 speed. My motor has never had the valve covers off. I changed exhaust, gears (3.55 to his 3.42), and some induction mods. He changed computer, exhaust and induction mods. With 121,000 miles I can outrun him 9 out of 10 times we race. Dont get me wrong. The LT1 cars run good, but a 5.0 can run with them. This was on radials, both cars peddling out of the hole. And I dont want to hear about him not being able to drive. We have had different cars at the dragstrip since we were 16. I watched a 99 GT Auto run a 9.01 in the eighth with nothing more than a K&N panel filter. There were 7 various LT1 and LS1 cars that could not get below a 9.1 that night. Maybe on a top end charge could they outrun a Stang, but they are still plastic pieces of junk. By the way, my buddy sold the Formula. Looking for a 5.0.
LAST EDITED ON 02-Feb-01 AT 08:29 AM (EST)[p]beleive it or not, I own a chevy along with my explorer. It is a 1995 Camaro (hell yeah) z-28 that I have been working on for quite some time with modifications. A kid at my work always tries to race me, he has a 350 something or another ford truck with like cherrybombs or something, I try to tell this kid that a stock z could burn his truck just because its made for racing and his truck is made for towing and stuff. Let's get serious guys no 302 could even come close to beating a z, the v-6 models only have about 200hp or so, so they would prob. loose if it was stock. don't even start with that stang because i have come across so many wimps with there gt's and cobras and they race me but obviously with a Vortech and all the junk i had to replace to accomidate it they don't stand a chance, I know your all diehard ford fans but lets be realistic, a 302 can never beat a camero even with my grandma driving. The cobra will beat a camero because it was made to roll with the z6, thats like saying the viper would beat a camero, duh. by the way, what is the price of a cobra anyway, like 40g's, and a stock z, 25-30 hmmm
Anyways I like my Explorer and it runs good, that's all that matters.

OH GOD, its another ch*vy guy, why do you guys need a 350 to outrun a 302???? why not take your 350 camaro and pick on a f150 lightning? it has a comparable size engine in it and would make you run home crying to mommy!!!! and a 302 cobra will outrun a 350 camaro if I put all the ***** on my GT that you have on your camaro then you would get you a$$ beat.
