When I was 19, I had an '84 Pontiac Trans Am with a 305/4bbl and a TH700R4 automatic. At the same time, my dad owned an '89 Mustang LX 5.0 with the four speed auto. That car was much, much faster than mine.
I also test drove an '84 Mustang cop car that year, which was also much faster than my sorry old TA. I doubt another 45 cubic inches would have helped my car much. Wheel spin with the cop car was pretty hard to control, though.
I think this might be an apples/oranges thing because all of those old 350-equipped Camaros in the '80s had automatics and could control wheelspin better than a five speed Mustang. All the car magazines back then had the Mustang running pretty close with the 5.7 Liter Camaros.
With all this stuff gettin tossed around, I thought Id get into the mix. Ive got a 71 Stang with a 351c 2v, 3 speed on the floor, and 2.73 gears. Slippin the clutch at about 4500 for a launch controls the wheel spin, and has let me keep with a mid 90s 350 Camaro with 3.50s outta the hole. Then at about 35 mph the stang really starts to growl, and makes power all the way to 50 mph at which point Im in front. I grab 2nd and never look back. I grab 3rd at around 80 and the car goes like a rocket. Not many cars can keep up, But I have lost, and do give my props to the winners. Im not a sore looser, after all its not really about winning, its the head snapping jump from 1st to 2nd that makes racing fun. Winning is just a bonus. But since its such a big bonus Im workin on a new project for the stang. Shes gettin a 351w out of a mid 90s Truck backed with a Tremec and 3.55 posi gears. Oh and did I mention a pair of Garret Turbos? I wanna run it in the Silver State Challenge, and think it'd be pretty cool to run in the same class as vipers, porches, and Ferraris.

I read the lighting is only a couple ticks slower than the Cobra R in the 1/4 mile! Tell me ur camaro can do that stock.......not mention the lighting engine is 3 liters smaller (not sure of cubic inches) and maybe only 2 grand more money......
Ken, the new mustangs simply don't have the grunt in stock form like my camaro does. My '68 mustang needs to be rebuilt. It has a 390 with headers and 4 speed behind it. I will take the older mustangs over the newer ones. Besides, my favorites toys are my 2- 55 Ford trucks!
