If you have the EATC then yes it is normal, the computer will control the ac and do a bunch of different thing to control the ac, one thing is to put in on 60 degrees and press the vent button with the max ac/recirculate button, this eliminates the AUTO function, which is the computer controlled function

My 06 XLT makes the same hissing noise you guys are talking about. I have wondered what was up but haven't done anything about it yet. Now I guess I won't need to. This forum is AWESOME!
Mine does the same thing, took it in the first time for just the hissing noise and they said it was normal. The second time I took it in there was a clicking noise on the passenger side along with the hissing noise which turned out to be the blend door actuator. I have just learned to deal with mine.
Anyway, its the refrigerant flashing back to gas at the orifice in the evaporator - the thing that gets cold behind the dash. As the compressor cycles on and off, you get the hissing on and off. Compressors will cycle more often when they get a little low on refrigerant so on an older vehicle you should have the refrigerant pressures checked once in awhile. In the meanwhile, just turn the radio up.
