I need to lube my slip yoke but I have a question. The clamps that hold the boot on are special. Can you rent the tool to put new ones on or do you use something else? Another kind of clamp or what? Thanks.
I've never tried to rent the tool, so I'm not sure. The tool ain't very spendy, and Oetiker clamps are everywhere, so I bought the tool a while back. Can't remember how much I paid for it. If you're careful, you can use end nippers or a dull pair of dikes, but ya gotta be careful!
I wouldn't use another type of clamp except maybe a Band-It clamp, but they're a pain in the butt.
I rigged a "pincher" which I then used the channel locks to squeeze and crimp the band. It wasn't simple but it worked. I think I am correct that the band is made of stainless and thus difficult to cut, but still you want to take care.
