Hello everyone. I have a 97 Explorer, 4.0, SOHC, 4X4 with an automatic trans. So, I'm driving along Interstate 5 in California cruising at about 70ish and the Over Drive clicks off and I feel that surge in RPMs like it happens when you lick it off and then it starts blinking. The truck is still running, but with higher RPMs and I can't seem to turn it back on / off--or get it to stop blinking. Any ideas? The repair manual and owners manual don't say anything about this. Any ideas?
This is usually and indication that something has gone wrong with the transmission and the truck has put it into "limp home" mode, it will shift harder than usual and is not good for it. You need to find out what is wrong with the tranny before it becomes toast.
I am sure others will post more information as they come across this thread.
Thanks K2JJB. I thought about it because my Expedition has a "limp mode" , but the 97 SOHC 4X4 Explorer doesn't have this kind of a mode--at least not according to the owner's manual or repair manual. The Haynes Repair manual under "Transmission Control Switch" states that the "Transmission Control Switch is located on the shift lever, which allows the driver to turn the Overdrive capability On or Off. " Is it possible that it might be bad and is what causes the blinking? When I disconnected the battery and reconnected it, it was not blinking anymore, but after about 200 miles of driving it came back on--blinking. Thoughts?
You need to get your transmission codes pulled.. the blinking O/D is indicating a problem.. and it is prohibiting overdrive operation as a result.
First stop by a local autozone, or other chain parts store (most will scan codes for free)... keep in mind they will likely only be able to post generic codes, but hopefully something will show up as far as your transmission is concerned. Post what codes they find here and we'll try to help.
If they don't find any codes, it's possible their scanner isn't capable of pulling them. Try a dealership or transmission shop. Good luck
I had the flashing O/D light, but it was related to a faulty alternator. My understanding is that the transmission circuit boards will error if not receiving proper voltage.
Check you voltage on the battery both running and not running.
