Unhappy Third gear hits so hard ...

'97 F250, but I got two big issues mechanically.

Third gear hits so hard it feels like I'm getting rear ended. Had someone tell me it was probably the filter in the auto trans. Dealer says "soleniod or we have to tear it down".

2nd - can't shift into 4 low. I'm not any kind of 4x4 guru, but I'm following the book and it still doesn't work.

If it matters, it's carrying a 7.3 with 136k on it and it has manual hubs.

Shout out to miker67 and opinions on this site for helping pick out new hubs. Ordered Warn Premiums. They get here next week. Can't wait to install!!

How often do you put it in 4 lo? Sometimes it's a real getting the lever in just the right spot to go to 4 lo.

Cheapest would be to do a fluid/filter change and add a inline filter on the return line. When was your last change? Any other trans probs? Lots of towing?
Did the dealer actually take it for a ride with the scanner or are they just guessing?

Never had it in 4 lo. Tried once and wound up yanking hard on the shift lever and the **** came off in my hand! No good. It just won't move.
No other trans problems, previous owner told me he did a tranny flush. This would be about two years ago. Dealer did take it for a ride. Was having starting problems, starter would scream at times. Turns out the fly wheel had a few spots worn down so when the starter engaged in one of those low spots it couldn't catch and it was a metal on metal grind. At any rate they replaced the fly wheel and during the test drive, they felt the hard shift. They checked the tranny fluid and said it was clean.

to go into 4lo makes sure your in neutral with the brake on. then pull back and when it stop moving back you need to push down and pull back. It should go then. if not the shifter is rusted up under the truck and will need to be removed and freed up. For the tranny I would change the filter and fluid and see what happens. Then take it to a tranny shop to have them scan it and drive it to see what they think.

Thumbs up Easy to remedy.

It's common for an un-used shifter to be difficult to go into 4 low. Get under there with a can of WD-40 or PB Blaster and spray the shifter linkage really good and then get in the truck and move it around a lot and then spray it again and move it. This will clean off the dirt and lube it. It's really good and easy if someone gets in and moves it while you're under there so you can see where it needs to be sprayed. There's a little metal on metal close tolerance action with the push down action, so watching that happen and getting the spray in the right place makes it happen pretty quickly. SIMPLE fix and then shift it from time to time(maybe monthly) just to do it and keep everything clean and free to move.

Thanks for all the replies. It was new guy error. Thanks to Tim for helping me out there, but I'm also taking the advice of shifting into 4lo everyonce in a while. the back yard is plenty steep enough to use there. tell you what used the truck to put a dock in and then climbed out of the yard in 4lo, thing freakin hops even with the bed loaded with crap from cleaning the garage!

Got the Warn hubs in, hmmm....shiney. They go in this weekend and then I tackle the tranny filter. We'll get there.

This site is great!

When I first bought my truck I couldnt figure out how to get her into 4lo... I tried and tried and tried but nothing.
My roommate who was with me actually figured it out by accident by reaching for something across the cab and used the X-fer case stick to support his weight. It was at just the first spot and it slid right intp 4lo. Once you figure out the right spot it slides in w/no problems now

The filter doesn't make any sense. Why would the filter decide to only act up on the 2-3 shift, not on the real high demand times like reverse?

A solenoid is not all that likely, either. I'm betting that the 2-3 accumulator is stuck. Here's a link to the '97 shop manual. Go to automatic trans and exploded view to find the accumulator body. It's part 191. 1997 F-250/350/Super Duty Workshop Manual

before mine blew it slipped on the 2-3 shift and it felt how you are describing. isnt there a safety thing in there to double the line pressure and smack it in to gear? cuz it would make it feel like the rear end was jumping off the ground. does it only happen during heavy throttle?

OD lamp would have to flash. This would limp mode the trans.
Limp would raise the epc. This would make all the shifts harsh.

my od light didnt flash until the night it blew. but it had been hitting hard since i bought it. not everytime but sometimes it happened. and it only happened during full tilt boogie. if i let off until it shifted then smaked it again it wouldnt do it.

I have a little bit of what you all describe going on but not all of any of the replys. Hits hard only in 2 - 3, only once in a while. Been hauling loads of sand in the bed the last couple of weeks and no shifting proplems when under load but I'm really taking it easy on the throttle. No flashing OD light. Likely to take Mr. Kovalsky's advice and peruse the link he provided.

Bill, I have a dumb question - what's a "VB"?

Thanks All!

Now an even dumber question. Valve body. As in valves on top of the motor or is there a valve body on the tranny? I'm really not this stupid, but I'm lost on this one.
