Anyone ever put tow hooks on the front of a 79 f-150? my buddy has a pair off a old chevy and I was thinkin about putting them on my ford. It would sure be better than wrapping the chain around the frame by my radiator.
some people will differ, but anything safer and better on your truck will help. if you can find a way to mount them, do it! i have a winch bumper with some custom mounting hooks and they work great for pulling something or doubling my winch. just make sure that if you bolt them in to use grade 8 or better bolts. some expensive bolts might save an expensive windsheild or even your life.
I put some on my 78 (same as 79) F150. At first I bought the little chrome ones but those were way too small for the big straps. I picked up a pair of bigger ones (not sure what they're off of) at a swap meet for $10. I bolted them to the bottom of the frame rail and used a 1/4" plate on top for extra strength. I could lift the truck with these things. You can kind of see them in this pic.
Just be sure to purchase a set large enough to be safe during a big pull. I have seen more than one set straighten right out. Closed style, like those found on Super Duties are the safest.
Mine are like KJKozak2's. The 88-98 chevy towhooks have a threaded back plate that will sandwich the framerail. The bolts take an 18mm socket. They can bend, but they mount horizontal, and are beefy, so stuff stays on them.
I have since added a front hitch, and so I rarely use my towhooks. You can see it all in my gallery.
I bought a set of 10000# hooks from Princess Auto, welded together some 1/2" plate and bolted them to the inside of the front spring perch. Pics in my gallery.
How about using some SuperDuty tow hooks? They're incredibly strong and can be had for cheap on Ebay. I paid $13 for a set complete with bolts, shipped to my door.
I've got some old stainless Made In Taiwan ones that came from Dick Cepek. They weigh like 4 pounds a piece and I've used them to pull EVERYTHING, havn't bent/broke one yet (after 10 years).
