My vote is post 63 327. I don't see the earlier "draft tube" (pre pvc) Casting numbers will date the block and head numbers will determine the heads/stock hp.
It's absolutely a Chevy small block. Short water pump, 4 bolt valve covers, Delco dist in the back, carb, etc. all points to chevy without a doubt.
Ask the owner if the valve cover bolts are straight across from each other or slightly staggered from top to bottom. If staggered, it's pre 1959.
Just looking at it, my best guess would be early to mid 60's. Could be 283 or 327, can't tell without numbers (externally the same). If you get some numbers, let me know and well decipher it once and for all.
Absolutely early 60's Chevy, guess no more and get a blue oval in it! Real trucks don't wear bowties!
Its definately an early small block Chevy , it looks VERY similar to the 265 in my 56 sedan. Definately either a 265, 283 or maybe the 327.
The telltale signs to a Chevy engine are the distributer that is at the rear of the engine (also sitting straight up rather than at an angle), and the oil filler/breather is always (as far as I know) angled the opposite way to the ford Y block ones.
I am in the same line of thinking as Paul on this one for sure.
OK, enough wasted band width about chebby. Does anybody have a deal on a Ford engine so he doesn't get suckered into buying this fine example of the other guys? Jag
