I don't know differences between the modern engines just by looking at them, I know a little more about the flatties. A person who I have been coresponding with via email has a '49 F-6 with this engine in it and we're wondering what engine it is. I think the manifold are Ram Horns?
dist in the back means it could be dodge or Chevy, but odds are it's a dodge 318 by looking at the color blue. But I'm not too familiar with the older engines. What is the cast number and firing order?
I have no idea, the guy just sent me the picture. I told him I was going to post the picture here and let you guys have a look at it. Maybe he'll chime in on more info.
I'm thinking that's a Ford Y-Block, and I'm not sure on the size. Y-Blocks have the dizzy's in the back. Look at the shape of the heads on that block, it's a "Y", and the exhaust manifolds have the ram horn look, too. Here's a link on some Y-Blocks.
Any chance of getting casting numbers off the block. If it is a chevy then he can easily get the numbers by pulling the tranny access panel and record the numbers off the rear of the block on the drivers side between the head and the bell housing on the transmission.
If you get the numbers and post them it will be easy to determine the size and year from the casting. Also if possible get the casting numbers from the front of the head on the passenger side and this will tell you if they are a performance head vs a standard head.
That is, without doubt, either a Chevy 283 or a Chevy 327. Clues; Rochester carb, valve covers with four bolts, generator, not an alternator, oil filler/breather in intake manifold. Note the 'rams horns' manifolds, probably a truck engine.
don't Y block distributors come out an angle? This one's straight up and down.
Hmm, good point, and I'm no expert either. I just see blue paint on an engine in a ford truck that is Y shaped and I think Ford. I have never owned a Y-block or a chevy engine, so I'm probably wrong on this one then.
The Y-block oil filler points the other way. The water outlet is mounted on the front and points up, rather than mounted on top pointing forward. The Y-block also has a large cast timing cover. You can tell this is a Chevy because of the visible space between the water pump and the timing cover.
Looks just like the 283 that I had in a 55 chevy. Look at the front of the heads and see if they have a half moon on them or a upside down V if it's a V it's a 327 with power pack heads. .........RUSTY
The water pump looks like the short style, which would also lean towards an early Chevy 283/327 instead of a Chevy 350 or late 283/307/327. The short water pump was used on some later Corvettes, but mostly on early Chevy small blocks. Also, the heads don't seem to have accessory bolt holes on the ends.
