wow, that's a few km's.
Try a minor tune first then make a judgement.
A compression test for starters.

Never seen a timing chain go bad in the X engine.
Ping is usually associated with running lean, check for vacuam leaks and clean the MAF.
Have you pulled any codes?
Do the plugs and wires, do not use Champion, I find NGK (P) and Motocraft(Px2) work best.
BTW, we have X engines with 335,000+k and 425,000k, never opened other than intake gaskets.

Best to change the O2 sensors first. Aquanaut might agree.

Best to test the O2, before replacing them. dont throw $$$ away.
Pull the codes (even if the MIL is off)
After you do the tune-up (get rid of missfire) then we can look at the other problems.

When you are finished with your tune up and have pulled the codes for us, here is some more reading and test proceedure for your O2's.

Note; 9 0f 10 that I have tested proved to be well within operating perameters, and the owners just wasted their hard earned cash.

That is the sad truth.
The codes will point to a system and the first thing people do is install a widget.
Then bitch because it didn't work.

I had a mild ping under load that was difficult to diagnose. It slowly became worse. I tried everything including engine diagnosis, plugs and wires (the plugs showed signs of timing problems) and cleaning the mass air flow sensor. But it didn't help. The O2 sensors showed within range on the scanner.
I ended up changing the timing chain, tensioners and guides for the dreaded rattle (a separate noise made by my engine). The ping went away. I fiugre the slop in the time chain from the worn out guides was causing the pinging problem, too.
Also, I thought there was a TSB for a slip of the timing chain drive due to a key that can come out. But I can't find it now.
