By pinging, do you mean a knocking sound like the timing is too far advanced (pre-ignition?) Couple years ago my 4.0 did this, switched from regular to mid-grade gas, went away. Few months later started knocking again, had to go up to premium to stop it. Few more months later started knocking again, Stealership couldn't find anything wrong, they said drive it and don't worrry about it. I worried, had to use octane boost to stop the knocking.
Soon octane boost wouldn't stop the knocking. Took it to another mechanic, he couldn't find anything wrong, but pulled chip out from above the master brake cylinder (don't know what it's called) and that stopped the knocking. It also tubed my fuel economy. Took it to another stealership. They said the mass airflow sensor had to be replaced and the injectors serviced. $450 dollars later and the van is fixed, and never had another problem with it.
Many time the oxygen sensor (near the air filter with 4 security type torx screws) just needs to be cleaned with elelctrical cleaner spray. Go to a good hardware store and buy the type of drive you need, remove sensor, spray the "resistor" looking device and replace.
My 94 ext did the exact same thing when I bought it last Nov. and from reading up on the older posts I pulled the MAF sensor and cleaned it REAL well with electrical contact spray (the tiny wires were coated black with dirt). Bingo, idled smoother, pulled stronger (by the Official Levi's Dyno ) AND stopped all the pinging even on the weak-tea 87 octane. I was pleased to say the least.
BTW...the MAF Torx screws are the security type, I bought a driver bit set from Pep Boys. A few older posts suggest grinding the protrusions down OR replacing those screws altogether with a common Phillips or Allen head.

I hope you replaced that tiny chip that so called mechanic pulled out. That is for setting your timing. When it is removed it takes your computor out of the ignition circuit so it is not advancing the timing so you can set it. If its left out your van will not advance the timing when accelerating and it will be running rich. Cleaning the MAF sensor is a good thing to do periodically. Also the oxygen sensor should be replaced at 60,000 miles.
