I havw a 95 explorer,it has 302,000k on it just had trans rebuilt and I noticed the engine pinging under light load,it also has a miss when idling, time for plugs and wires or time for a rebuild?I was told the timing chain was on its way out.
I had a mild ping under load that was difficult to diagnose. It slowly became worse. I tried everything including engine diagnosis, plugs and wires (the plugs showed signs of timing problems) and cleaning the mass air flow sensor. But it didn't help. The O2 sensors showed within range on the scanner.
I ended up changing the timing chain, tensioners and guides for the dreaded rattle (a separate noise made by my engine). The ping went away. I fiugre the slop in the time chain from the worn out guides was causing the pinging problem, too.
Also, I thought there was a TSB for a slip of the timing chain drive due to a key that can come out. But I can't find it now.
