Dexron 5 fluid

Dexron 5 fluid
I have a 91 F150 4X4 5.0 5 speed. I want to change the trans and transfer case fluids. The manual calls for Dexron 3 fluid. Can dexron 5 be used in this application. Has anyone used Dexron 5 in there trans or transfer case. Any opinions appreciated.Thanks.

Well, actually, you're looking at Mercon III vs. Mercon V. Dexron is, I believe, a *cough* Chevy *cough* standard. There's a bit of a debate about whether V does harm to III trannies or not, but Ford seems to have put out a TSB that V is now acceptable in all trannies that previously required III, and III is being discontinued.
