Do the early v10 y pipes out of the 99 have any problems like the flutter. Do you think it would be worth while to use on in place of my restricted 03 y pipe or just go with all aftermarket parts. What brand is the best for headers and y pipes?
I had an early 99 and there was no choke points in the y-pipe. Dont know about the v10's. Probally could use the v8 y-pipe on the v10. I never noticed any flutter on my 99. How would the early y-pipe perform???
big 10 so you have an 03 2v V10 and thinking exhaust...why? power or noise or MPG
Not a lot to be gained in any department but noise...done right you might get an extra 5-11 hp out of the exhaust but unless you go exotic thats about it and you run the risk of changing the balance so you loose some bottom end grunt...
There are hundreds of exhaust posts here and all sorts of good pictures too...search a little for headers, or "y" pipes
All the headers make a lot more "in the cabin" noise
Most of the headers are good quality
Several of them are very expensive
Team Mudd will be along in a few to point you to his sound clips and other very good info..
I really just want better mpg. A little more power would be good but the truck isnt lacking in that department. I may try to use the early y pipe and if I dont see the results i want I can just change it back.
No one with a new exhaust has ever reported enough MPG gains to warrant the expense of the mods....
Best MPG gains are always factory tire diameters, higher tire pressures and softer right foot....
I bet is you researched all 7 years of this forums posts you would find the average MPG increase of any of all the mods ended up being 0.5 to 1.5MPG...
With the exception of a bed cover... I think the average gain reported is 1.5 to 2.0 MPG...But I suspect the higher tire pressure and softer foot were factors because the owner was in search of more MPG....

Yes the early Y pipes had the flutter problem, they where changed in late 2001 to the style that you have know.
Yup, Denny's right! The reason they changed to the T-pipe is due to the flutter from the earlier pipe...I suppose. Speculation at best really though. I've never actually spoken to a Ford powertrain engineer. We're all really just guessing that's why they did it since the flutter seems to be absent from the T-pipe design.
I didn't notice MPG gains from my set-up but then again I don't track MPG anymore. My eyes are closed due to wincing from looking at the $3.56 a gallon gas here.
I say leaves your alone unless you've got $70 laying around that you want to use to experiment for all of us. That's what a FM Y installed should run. You can then be the real test model for MPG & HP gains for all of us. Got a dyno close by? I'll spring for the after dyno run.
The increase in power could be from my Banks as well as the Y-pipe. I did both (foolishly & impetuously) at the same time.

I remember, way back when I was first looking at a Superduty to replace my highboy, there were people posting on here that they went in, comlpained about the flutter, and eventually, they put a new y-pipe on it - the necked down one.
I looked under my 2001 brand-new on the dealer lot (after sitting there for a year and a half), and thought "Oh boy! the TSB has already been done!" Because it was the necked-down pipe. But later I found they started putting on the necked-down pipe on the late 2000's or very early 2001's... I forget.
I could be wrong though that's the way I "remember" it...
ken, So you have headers and aftermarket y? Could you tell the differance? Did you lose any bottom end power? I just cant help but think that a 1.5in necked down pipe could be enough for a V10. I will leave it for now and see what happens when I have the $ to experiment with.
I know that is though to swallow but generally it is true... the hype of ALL the aftermarket intake kits is some sort of HP gain and all mostly above 3600rpm... down where you cruise at 70~75MPH the rpms should be between 2000-2250 and NONE of the air kits does anything better in that RPM range
Fredvon... thanks. I haven't actually received it in the mail yet, and may just send it right back for a refund. This really sucks. I wanted to get the diesel for better mileage, but the wife said she wouldn't drive one of those noisy things like I have in my truck. I don't know if I can maintain the price of the fuel at 8-9 mpg around town. She may just end up having to be embarrassed with a noisy vehicle.
