Y pipe back pressure

I have a 02 v10 130k. i have been asking some exhaust shops and mechanics about putting a Y pipe on my truck, but some have not heard of doin it and most say the T pipe is to give equal back pressure to each side of the motor, I need some advice on this. What is your take or experience on this? is there a way to do a Y pipe with equal back pressure? will the Y pipe actually offset the back pressure to each side of the motor?

Thanks, Luke

That y-pipe setup was designed to help cancel out the exhaust flutter, thats it. Its poor for performance and is nothing but a restriction point, kinda like the stock manifolds.

So the Y pipe does not add performance? or the T pipe gives poor performance?

The stock Y-pipe hurts performance because it is a restriction point. Like I said earlier the y-pipe was designed the way it is just to try and cancel out the flutter sound.

Ok, thanks. Anyone else heard anything about replacing the stock T-pipe with a Y-pipe and having back pressure issues? I need someone to convince me That a Y-pipe won't hurt my engine.

Banks uses a "Y" pipe as it increases flow.

I don't think it will hurt your engine but you will more than likely pickup an annoying flutter noise. Been there done that.

so change the T-pipe to a Y-pipe or stay stock? I am trying to open this motor up some, and hopefully get some more mileage out of it.

In MY findings, yes the y-pipe mod opened it up as you say, BUT the flutter that the mod created wasn't worth the gains. I ended up going to headers. If your after more gas mileage, I didn't get any better with the y-pipe mod, or headers for that matter.

Ok, thanks. I see you have the 5 star tuner with 87 perf. tune, what differences do you notice with that?

Of course the truck runs strong with the tune, but my main objective with the tune was to firm up the shifts and lock the torque converter at highway speeds which it does. It was very annoying to have the converter un-lock on decel at highway speeds, then on acceleration have the rpm's flair up then have the converter lock again.

Sorry be asking so many questions, but did it help your mileage any? do you tow a trailer, if you do how did it help with towing?

thanks.

No problem on the questions. No it did not help on mileage. I do tow a large Starcraft tent trailer but I haven't towed with the tuner yet. Look at my signature and you will see all my mods. Still getting the same mileage as before but a better running truck for sure. My advice on the y-pipe? Save for headers and get in on the Thorley deal going on. Too bad your not closer I could sell you my already welded up Y-pipe mod cheap if that's the way you want to go.

Go with headers that include a y-pipe such as Thorley or Banks.
