As far as the truck goes, If you wanted to do intake and exhaust you can without necessarily needing a set of gauges. If you want to get a chip or a tuner then a set of gauges are a must. If you want an awesome chip for that truck I would recommend going with a Dp-tuner or a Tony Wildman tuned chip. He's a mastermind at squeezing every pony he can outta a truck with some simple tunes. If your interested in intake then I to would go with the "Kwik Filter". Its just a huge **** Napa filter that goes in place of your airbox and it costs much much less then a aftermarket setup. There are many cheap mods you can do to your truck to gain reliability and some power. I would start with a 10k mod and shimming your FPR(Fuel Pressure Regulator). Irregardless, feel free to ask if you have any questions, were here to help and jack up that grin factor your lookin for.
Yep these guy pretty much have you heading in the right direction. In my mind intake is first (clean air is the life of your engine and the stock one is JUNK. get a tymar or a Kwik filter. they use the same filter but different tubing to hook it up.), Next exhaust (minimum a new down pipe up to a full blown 4 or 5" system), Then if you want a chip (DP- or Tony , both will blow any tuner away) a pyrometer is minum gauge needed, second needed is a trans temp if you have an auto, then boost guage. Those are the main three. Then you can get your chip.
