Well finally broke down and changed the spark plugs and wires in my 2001 Edge 4.0 and OMG even taking the passenger front tire off and going in from underneath these plugs had to be the worst set up i have had to change in my life.....Even worse than my v6 Fiero from years ago!!!!.Looking at the plugs now i can see why my truck is getting such semi crappy mileage....Why does Ford recommend such a long time before changing plugs my truck just rolled 80,000 miles on it and i can imagine if i waited till the 100,000 mile mark what they would look like. Got a set of motorcraft iridium plugs,Ford and Oreilys say the platinums have been superceeded so this is what they recommended and a new set of motorcraft wires and a fuel filter, and a fresh tank of 91 octane shell gas and 3.45 a gallon and reset my superchips tuner at its 91 octane setting and after 4 hours work WOW!!!!! The little truck runs like it has zero miles on it and with all the other mods i have done to it i did a little driveing around and think this might help the mpg situation alot if i can keep my foot out of it.
have a good week end all
I need to change the plugs on my '02 Ranger 4.0 I have changed the drivers side easy, but haven't decided how to change the passenger side. Thought the inner fender needed to come out and maybe the tire. Any suggestions. I'm putting Bosch plugs in.

How much of a power increase do you get from running 91 octane and a tuner??? jd
The Bamachips Xcal2 w/ 91 is 15-20 hp and similar torque increase documented on the dyno over stock.
I also have heard nothing but horror stories about Bosch plugs in the 4.0, so I do not recommend them. Motorcraft, Autolite, and NGK have all worked well for me.
Theres motorcraft, or you could allways try motorcraft and then theres motorcraft. Of course autolite will also work as well. I would need to check my owners manual for proper gap.
The sohc engine has been spec'd at anywhere from .054 to .065 depending on year, etc. When I changed mine, some were as high as .077 and I saw no change in performance or mileage w/ the new plugs, so the electrical system really does have the ability to fire those 'huge' gaps.
