My 97 4X4 powerstroke has the E4OD trans and I'm not used to the way they feel I guess. under light to moderate throttle, when it's going into 3'rd it comes down a couple hundred rpm for a couple seconds then all the way down. What is this pause? My 2000 model did that too and it had a different transmission. It also fried the pump out of it shortly after I bought it. I've rebuilt a lot of AOD and c-6 transmissions but I quit working for Ford before the E4's were really having any problems.
It certainly doesn't feel fried. The fluid is clean too. It shifts good in all other gears and pulls hard without slipping but it does have some miles on it. Should I worry about it? We're taking it on about a 2000 mile trip next week so.....
thats normal for both the E4OD and the 4R100. they are almost the same tranny. What you feel the 2 to 3 shift then the torque converter locking up very close to the shift. They almost happen at the same time. thats what you feel.
Thanks, That makes me feel better. When I rebuilt the trans in my 2000 model, it stopped doing that but I did a lot of modifications that a friend of mine currently working on them told me about. It shifted so hard and fast afterwards that it hurt sometimes. I had a bad accident in that truck, partly due to the hard shifting and totaled it. I had to give it just a little bit of gas to get into the traffic on the highway from an on ramp and it shifted gears right on a patch of ice I didn't see and the back end went right out from under me. I was on top of the center barrier before I even knew what was going on. Shift kits are nice but not on ice.
