Can anyone tell me if my 2001 ranger edge emergency brake be adjusted and where is the adjustment? Is it shelf adjusting? My pedal goes quite a ways down, real close to the floor.
You might try backing up & smartly stepping on the brakes a few times & see if the self adjusters will tighten things up some.
If not maybe the adjusters are bound up & not working, or the rear shoes are worn & need to be replaced, so I'd probably pull a rear drum & have a look see at the brake lining, emergency brake cable connections, & adjuster.
On my Taurus, it was lining wear. New rear brake shoes brought things back to normal, without having to adjust the emergency brake cable.
I'm curious- my truck does the same thing: pedal clear to the floor before the emergency brake will hold it.
The garage that did my inspection said that I needed to adjust the rear brake shoes closer to the drums to make the brake grab better, which certainly makes sense. I haven't done that yet, because I'm concerned that if I adjust the rear brakes out, the back end will get grabbier under hard stops. Am I right, or will it stop about the same, anyway. I like the way it stops now, but if the back brakes grabbed any harder, I think my stopping ability in the rain/snow would decrease because the back end would lock up too soon.

Thats not the case. There is a proportining valve that will apply the proper presser front and back. Adjust yer rear brakes till they just drag if the linnings are in good shape. Backing up and hitting yer brakes hard will adjust them if the adjusting skrews are free. If not than try by hand. But there is a trick to this.
I always had to adjust the '03 drums by hand. The self adjusters didn't work so hot. When you do start cranking the star wheel, pay VERY close attention to the amount of drag the shoes have on the drum. Just a little bit. The wheel only goes in one direction so if you go too far, the wheel and drum must come off to free up the starwheel adjuster. Another quick test to see if the rears need adjustment is to apply the parking brake all the way then hit the brake pedal. if it is firm then, but goes to the floor when disengaged, the rears aren't adjusted correctly.
Ya can back off the brake if ya get it to tight by pressing on the ajusting screw lock with a small punch or screw driver alowing you to release the brake by turning the ajuster backwards. This is the only way I know of to release the brake to remove the drum for brake repair.
When I took off the brake drum on the left side the self adjusting cable was severd. So the left brake shoes were not adjusting when I would back up. Replaced the cable and got more emergency brake.
Thank you for all the input. This site is the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
