I also need to know. Everytime I use the E-Brake it locks up my rear or does not release fully. I actual drive until it brakes free. Told the wife to not use it until further notice.
I just repaired the parking brakes on my 98 Exp. The parking brake system consists of a set of drum brakes inside the rear rotors. There is an adjuster that can be accessed from the slot on the backing plate very similar to the old style drum brakes. Like many other repairs on the expedition it was not easy to get the rotors off because there was a ridge of rust that built up on the inside edge of the drum section of the rotor making it impossible to collapse the parking brake shoes sufficiently.
I own a 2001 4x4 XLT. My rear brakes are disks not drums. It looks like the parking cable is attached to a lever at the top of the caliper on the inside. As far as I can tell the lever moves freely front to rear as the parking brake is engaged and released. It seems the caliper piston is not releasing. I'm going to disassemble them and look over them good this weekend.
