Now here's really a dumb question. I have been replacing some of the old stuff on my truck to eliminate future breakdowns and am now thinking about the old voltage regulator. I have a 1951 F1, with a 68 mustang 302, & C4 Trans. I can't find a voltage regulator on the truck. There must be one, I don't have a modern "one wire" alternator. The alternator looks original than probably came with the engine.
Anybody got any ideas.
Randy, I plan to replace the alternator, which if original is a 38 amp with a new one with a 55 amp rating. How is the voltage regulated with our setup. I'm worried about frying the battery. Yes, every voltage regulator I've seen is on the dash, but not here.
Reason I'm so paranoid, is that this truck sat in a barn for 12 years before I bought it, and I'm going to Knoxville with the boys. Just wanted to do stuff to make sure I get there.
New Carb, new fuel pump, new starter solenoid, new gas tank, new water pump, new radiator, new electric fan, new tranny shifter, rebuilt brakes all around, changed all fluids. All this done already.

Do a search on this forum, for "Ford alternator" and you should get a couple of threads with schematics and the answers to your questions.
In short, the regulator for alternators on Fords is more likely to be next to the starter solenoid. It is electronic, so it is smaller than what you may be looking for.

Someone did a bit of swapping of Ford alternators.
In 1985, Ford began offering an IRA. No that's not a savings account or an Irish army, but an Integral Regulator Alternator. On the back side of the alternator is a small black plastic box...there's your regulator.
The alternator looks similar to what '68 Mustangs used, which btw is the same as everything used from 1963 thru 1979. First Ford to have an alternator = 1963 T-Bird.

Good job Jim. I had the service for my dad today. I did get the ampmeter installed. I hooked up the brake light switch, attached the turn signal switch. I also put in headlights. I will have it fired up tomorrow afternoon. I may have to bleed the brakes again. There is a small leak going into booster. I may just need to tighten a little more. I also have to retorque head bolts so they will be done. Once that is complete, I will put in the seat frame and seats. I should be ready to go then. I will be picking up the wrecker bed on Tuesday. He will put it on the truck for me.
Kevin, again my sympathies for your loss. I think you're doing the right thing in keeping busy on the truck. Glad to hear you're still on a path to get us there. Incidentally, are you still planning to leave on Wed at noon. I plan to meet you in Masillion at Noon, so we can leave together.
