I have a 90 idi f350 and it has external voltage regulator. it's not charging What are the terminals for?? it has 4 on the regulator and 2 in plug on alternator and one hooked up to a stud.
now i bought a spare engine from an 87 with a 6.9 but it has a internal regulator and it seem to be factory installed.
Why would an older truck have a newer alternator.????
It has a plug with 3 wires on it. Does anyone know how to wire up that one??
Take some pics and post them up. I suspect that the 6.9 has a 3G upgrade, if done well, it can look factory. (Many use a piece of factory harness from the wreckers to do the wiring change.)
i already have it off but i'll take picture of the alternator later. it was off a cemetary yard truck i doubt it had an upgrade. maybe its a 7.3 ill check later i know for a fact it was out of a 87 truck with a zf5
Generally in 87 these had the 6.9's, but they had the better rockers and a few other upgrades. Many consider the 87 6.9 the best block to start with for a 'performance' build, as they have the strongest of the blocks, thickest cylinder walls etc. I suspect that somewhere at the end of 87/beginning of 88, that some were 7.3's as they switched over, so it could be possible.
As to the alternator, I'm no expert, but I thought that all of these IDI's (at least any v-belt ones) were all 1G alternators with external regulators originally. Around '92 the switch was made to serpentine belts, and some of those were still 1G as well. Not sure if the late IDI's were 1G or 3G though, but I'm thinking they were 1G for the entire span of these engines.
It doesn't mean that yours has or hasn't been upgraded though, it's possible that the cemetery had a good mechanic they used and it got an upgrade at some point due to a failed alternator or something.
I can't find the page I'm thinking of right now, but there are pages online that show the differences between 1G and 3G alternators that may help you figure it out.
i'll post a pictures. well the regulator isnt really internal it seems its on the back of the alterntor. one plug has batter and stator wire. other plug has 3 wires.
i fixed it i think but it started raining. previous owner did some shoddy wiring work. inside the plastic tube where the wires go were put connectors and they were all corroded and rotted. field and battery are getting 12v constantly then there ignition wire and the white one for stator must power the dash light and give input back to the regulator.
the stock alternator looks big. how many amps is it and why upgrade?
The 1g should be 100amps. Its pretty big but its nothing like a 165amp 3g which produces way more power at idle.
I don't plow with my idi and 100 is way more then enough for the truck. If you have a plow i'd upgrade they pull tons of juice. My 91 takes a crap with the 95amp 2g. I'm putting a 3g on it with the smallest alternator pulley i can buy.

Also would a 4.9 from a 93 work in a diesel??
I dont know if it's just me, but I'm having a hard time understanding what you've got going on here. You say you have an external reg but I think you're saying the alt has a 2 wire plug and the big battery wire, which I believe is an internal reg. Are you sure it's got an external reg?
Let me clarify. my truck i just got the alternator wasn't putting out amongst other thing wrong with it. I have a spare engine from a 87 6.9 but the alternator on that one has an internal regulator(the one in picture) I thought that was weird that an older truck 6.9 would have an internal regulator and my newer 90 one has an external on the fender.
Guys here suggested someone may have swapped it to a 3G so I posted a picture for him to look at it.
I googled 3g but seems they have holes in the front and this one doesn't. So is it something oddball?
