OK, then I am confused. The repair manual I have has a section on "Vehicle Speed Sensor" Operation, Testing, and Removal & Installation on Page 4-18 and 4-19. The VSS I replaced is bolted into the top-front of the rear differential and has an electrical connection.
Then on Page 9-33, the RABS "General Information" section mentions a "Speed Sensor", among other things. Is that the one you're talking about?
I guess it depends on which manual you are referring to. The 96-99 Factory service manual has no VSS listing for our trucks. The VSS in post #11 above doesn't exist on out trucks.
That picture looks like the VSS that I bought from the dealership.
I think we've hijacked this thread long enough. My apologies to the communtiy.
I think it is time to say we may have a semantics issue. My repair manual is the Chilton's old number 26666 for the 1997-00 Pick-ups/Expedition/Navigator, not to be confused with the new manual with the same number.
Evidently, Chilton's updated the book and didn't change the book number at the top-right of the front cover.
my 97 had the exact same problem not 2 weeks after i got it back from getting the tranny rebuilt. i thought they just messed my tranny up worse by trying to fix it, turns out it was just that speed sensor on the top of your rear end(pumpkin). the previous owner of the truck tried to spice the wires themselves and over time the wires just came apart. i got my sensor at the tranny shop that i had rebuild mine. it cost me about $85 and i havent had that problem since!

sorry about the double reply. also, follow the wires that run into that sensor to see if you may have a cracked or split wire somewhere near the sensor. mine was split about 1-2 ft up the wire!
thanks guys for your replies, appreciate the info. my fuse hasn't popped in a
