I just purchased a 91 Bronco and the Guy told me the transmission was slipping sometimes. I drove it about a mile, no problems, then I drove it today and saw what he meant. Its not slipping though, its hunting for gears. It'll go from OD to 2nd back to drive, to 1rst back to OD ect.... He said he had a speed sensor changed once before when the speed odometer quit working. What would cause it to hunt like this? I also noticed the speedo doesn't work sometimes and when it does it usually isn't right. Also when its hunting gears the speedo needle bounces from below zero to 50 or 60 mph. Any ideas???
This trans is completely computer controlled and speed is a vital computer input but there are others as well. Start by pulling the codes to see what is flagged and go from there, post up the results you get.
Does your truck have an electronic odometer? If so the speed signal goes through a device called the PSOM in the speedo cluster before it reaches the powertrain computer, and that would mean your speedo issue and the trans misbehavior are related to common problem with the cluster or the PSOM module.
