im not sure why,but recently our fridge has been leaking water from the back (inside near the top, where the freezer and the top of the fridge area meet up).
its like there is condensation building up on the back wall near the top inside the fridge, and then dripping down the back wall down to the crisper in the bottom of the fridge.we have to wipe up the water out of the bottom of the fridge every couple of days. has anyone had this problem? any ideas? is it time to shoot the fridge, and put it out of its misery?
How old is it? Is it a cold air or does it have coils? If it's a cold air, your auto defroster is not funtioning and your vents are getting an ice buildup. Many times you can just shut it down for a couple of hours and that will solve the problem.
If it is a coil type. The box is freezing from the inside out, which means you may have to totaly defrost it for at least a day or two.
If it sounds like your compressor is running more than usual, you need to defrost.
Some refrigerators have the defrost drain down channels in the back wall.
Others have pipes inside the back. We had one with the channels, and they could get blocked when stuff got shoved too far back. Also, there is a drain at the bottom that can get plugged. When it does you get water.
In any event, I think it has something to do with your defrost.
Check the drainage system, there's usually a small cup at the top of the fridge section that will clog over time (usually a frozen pea or a coffee bean). If your's has the cup that leads into a clear plastic tube in the outside back, just pull it and make sure it's clean and free of clogs. Also, it's good to just pour hot water down the back of the freezer, this will loosen up any debris in the system. If you have a lot of Ice build up in your freezer too, your defrost timer is probably dead (that's if you have a "frost free "model).
Oh and general info to all, the "energy saver" switch that is usually over the door with the cold controls should NOT be set to conserve energy. There's asmall electric wire that heats up and keeps moisture from building up around the doors and gaskets. With that off, your fridge will rust more quickly and the gaskets will warp and not keep a good seal.
I spent 3 years working at a fridge refurbishing shop , so I picked up a few things...
Im not sure of what may be wrong with your fridge, but if you need a different one, check out vancouvers craigslist. There is tons of them on there around the lower mainland.
yep ours youst to do that, the thang clogs up and fills underneath the drawers in the bottom full of water , and if u ferget to wipe it out , it will run out in the floor ... i remeber when i youst to get up at 5 in the mornin to go to school and walk in the kitchen in the dark and step in tha cold water . it will wake u up quick ...
That's right, the floor drains clog like crazy too. Best be for that is to bring the hose in a blast the blockage out. It's a bit messy and wet, but it'll get the job done. (I was a few beers deep on my last post, so I can't remember everything)
thanks everyone for the replies and advise. i pulled the fridge out, vacuumed off all the parts and pieces on the back and bottom, cleaned the drain tubes, and its a frost free so i just flushed out the surface areas with warm water(incase there was a piece of ice i didnt see). it seems to be dry now. so i'll watch it for now and see if that all fixed it. thanks again
