Bangin Pipes

Anyone have any ideas on how to stop my cold water pipes from banging when I turn off any of the faucets on the cold water side? This happens on every fixture. It's especially loud when the washing machine's cold water side shuts on and off. I had to set the washing machine's water to warm on both the wash and rinse cycle. I tried to drain all of the water from the system and bleed out all of the air several times but to no avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How long has this been going on? It seems as if you don't have any "bumpers" or accumulators.

Ooooh maybe 15 years or so, just after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. We had a new 1 inch service put in to replace the old 1/2 inch galvanized pipe that's been there since around 1903. It increased the volumn of water and made it a little louder.

sierraben. im not a plumber, but do you have extra copper for air chambers off your washer water lines. they are for water hammer, and i believe they will cure your problem. hopefully a plumber will come along and explain this much better for you than i can. good luck

A small expansion tank should fix the problem. They are inexpensive, and fairly easy to put in. You just T off of the main water pipe somewhere.

Thanks. I'll give the expansion tanks a try. I think every fixture does have air chambers in both the hot and cold side. Again, thanks for the input.

do you have a crawl space or other way to see the lines? if you can, make sure they are all properly supported. thats the most common problem. water hammer happens but not nearly as often as loose pipes flopping around. usually water hammer only happens at a particular fixture not all of them. also check your pressure to make sure you PRV is working (if you have one).
to high pressure won't help the problem any.

My copper lines are mainly in the garage. When the cold water side shuts off abruptly, I can see the pipe shake. When I secure the pipe with clamps, the banging seems to move else where. I don't have a PRV, so I'm running about 105 psi; same as the fire hydrants on the corner. I can probably secure all of the pipes in the garage but the baggin also sounds like it's between the floors. I don't think I'm up to tearing down the sheetrock off of the ceiling just yet. I think I'll try the expansion tank idea. Hey, thanks people for your input. It's really appreciated.

I believe I would put in a pressure reducing valve at the same time, before a washing machine hose blows and ruins your house. The insurance adjuster would probably frown at the lack of one.

I do plan on putting on a PRV real soon, like this weekend. I never had a washing machine hose blow yet ( knock on wood). We went one step further when we remodeled the back of the house and had a tiled in surround with a drain, something like a shower base) installed just in case there was a mis-hap. But still I'm gonna install a PRV and an air chamber.
