I know this isn't a ford car forum, and I frequent some of the other forums for help, but I am hoping that someone can help me here. I am building a hobby stock (entry level at a local track) circle track car. It is an 82 Gran Marquis with a 302 in it. Now I have a few questions. Car was running when I started into it. I want to eliminate all of the wiring, and just have the necessities to run it. The distributor is i think points with vaccuum advance. I haven't ever tried to wire a 302 up before. What can or can't I cut out as far as wiring goes. Dash will be gone, AC gone, just the engine and what it needs to run. Plus was wondering if anyone ever had any experiences with that variable venturi carb. Personally it looks like junk to me. Any help would be appreciated.
If it has the original engine, it should have a duraspark II ignition. So you will have to keep some of the wiring for it, and the module on the fender.
I would not start ripping wiring out, and possibly cause more problems that you started with. It will not hurt anything if you tie unused wires out of the way.
You may want to get another manifold and carb to get rid of the vacuum venturi setup.
For the distributer question, I think you'll want a Duraspark II system if you don't already have one. In either case the wiring schematic is shown in a couple of posts by 1975Ford here.
thanks you guys are great...now with all of this information in mind. Is it possible to just use the duraspark ignition module, coil, starter solenoid, and bypass the ecm on this certain car. I don't need any guages or any factory operated electricals to operate.
thats all you need is the stuff in that diagram.plus mabe mil1ion will be along and he could give ya the diagram for the altinater(late 70's style).on the durasprk run the white wire to the s terminal on the solinoid and the red one to a toggle switch for your ignition switch
here is the wiring diagram that i found and posted to my webserver. It is the right diagram and shows an ecm...So i guess you are saying I can bypass it?
That is the EEC4/TFI ignition system, i had that on my truck. Nothing you have on the car is needed. Remove carb and throw it away. You can remove the distribuitor and all the wires in the harness that goes over the engine and through the firewall. You can then remove all the vacuum lines except for the brake booster and the vacuum reservior. Find a Duraspark2 distribuitor, wire harness, coil, and blue grommet module. Install, put switched power to the red wire on the module (the white wire is for easier cranking by retarding timing but i didnt connect that on my 351w and it starts fine). The coil needs a inline resistor on the power side, and the coil needs power on start and run positions of the key. I found an unused connector on the drivers side fender that had power on start and run that i used for both the coil and module. Run ported vacuum(from carb) to the vacuum advance on the distribuitor.
Yep, he's right. Your distributor probably has no vacuum line on it correct? So you need to replace it, and everything else like he said. You could actually put an old points dist in if you wanted to. And then use it to run a msd box, if the rules allow it. A duraspark II would work good too. You could also install one of those aftermarket distributors. The good thing about them is it's easier to play with the advance weights.
I would try to use the best set-up the rules would allow.
It is a duraspark II dual mode from what I can find. The distributor doesn't look like it has points but rather "vanes" there is a box that is labeled "microcomputer control unit". Not sure about this guys..thinking about leaving it all in and just running it...
