Its an 80 F-150 302. when its cold, any time of the year but worse in winter, it has to crank forever to get started. I dump gas down the carb, and crank away, usually have to jump it. When it finally starts it stalls easy until it warms up. Once its warm it will start easy. I’d like to know if I can get this to fire easier, I am prepareing it for the demos next smmer, and hopefully get one more year of plowing out of it.
It has all the emissions goodies ripped out. The air tube in the back is gone and the holes on the heads are not plugged, so its kinda loud.
Things I have done over the last 4 – 5 years;
Edelbrock 4bbl and intake installed
Hand choke
The whole fuel delivery system is new, custom but new, (fuel line runs to a 5 gal can with some holes drilled in it.)
New battery, 650 amps
New dizzy
New alt.
New voltage regulator
New coil, wires, plugs
New power steering pump, which didn’t fix anything. Who ever drives this in the demos is going to have sore arms for a while
I’ve checked, rechecked, looked, and searched for vacuum leaks, The tranny, a C4 I believe, is slow, when I throw it in gear it will act like its in neutral for a couple seconds before it catches. This isn’t all bad cause it lets me rev it up a little to try and keep it from stalling. Would this have anything to do with it? I have a clear type fuel filter and its always full. I’m thinking about rewiring it, just hooking up the basics.
What should I look at next, timing chain? Wiring? My 30-30?
i had the same problem until a budy came along and helped me out. i had an old 351m out of and 81 in my truck. every morning i went to start it i had to lay on it. after i got it started i had to keep it rived up to 2000 rpm for a minute or two before it would stay running other wise it would cut off. my buddy adjusted my timing on it. that was all that was wrong. the timing was off. after he timed it i pumped the peddle two or three times and fird up with less effort. i didnt have to keep holden the gas down till it warmed up, but i had to let it run for a min or so before i drove it. check your timing. make sure thats right.
