I know that many people with the 7.3's end up upgrading their transmission cooler with a new one from a 6.0 truck to keep tranny temps down.
I'd be interested in looking into that, but those 6.0 coolers are bringing an easy $200 apiece on ebay these days..... a bit steep.
Would a reasonable alternative be to swap to a V10 cooler? From what I can tell ( I don't have one in front of me to measure) they look like they are somewhat larger than the 7.3 cooler, though not as large as the 6.0.
Is that not correct?
I'm just thinking that if I can go with the V10 one and stand a chance of realizing even a 15* difference, then it will be a good investment without having to drop a couple hundred bucks....
the v10 cooler is a little bigger than the stock 7.3 unit (like 14 rows instead of 9) a better bet if you dont want to drop the cash for the 6.0 cooler is to get a tru-cool and just put it in line with the stock one.

As far as how much towing I'm doing, the truck is used to tow the family travel trailer and a medium sized bass boat.
The new gauges are on the way (old ones were part of the deal with the old truck) - but I'd suspect that it will run similar to 7.3 that I traded in......unloaded, I rarely saw 160-170...only in the hottest of summer.
The hottest it ever got towing was right around 200*, but that was in 105* temps in South Carolina in August towing the camper. Figured that was reasonable, and once I got back on open interstate it settled down.
Assuming this truck runs the same temps as the last, I fugure a little extra insurance might be a good thing, but I'm not sure shelling out 200 clams for a 6.0 cooler is worth it at this stage of the game--

At 200 deg, I'd like to see a bigger drop. That way if something goes wrong, I have even more margin.
