6.0 tranny cooler upgrade in a V10?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has done the 6.0 tranny cooler upgrade for the V10. I know that a lot of 7.3 owners have done it, but haven't come across any that have done it for the V10.

Does the 6.0 cooler drop in to the V10 like it does for the 7.3 PSD and is the installation process about the same?

Thanks,

Brian

Its a bolt on mod no matter what engine you have, all you have to do is modify the cooler lines since the 6.0 tranny cooler lines are bigger than the ones on our trucks.

So is this added to the existing cooler or a replacement?

Replacement.

The 6.0L trans cooler is about the same size as the 7.3L's and the V10's put together.

For us 7.3 guys, it's a no-brainer upgrade for towing. For you V10 guys, if you tow heavy or a lot of mountains, it can help too.

Before the 6.0L's came out, the popular upgrade for us 7.3'ers was to use the V10 trans coolers as a replacement or in series along with our stock coolers.

There was a picture of the 6.0L trans cooler next to a 7.3L and V10 posted recently in the 7.3L forum. I'll see if I can find it and post it here.

If I remember correctly, there are two different 6.0 coolers. The early one has more rows of fins than the newer one, however, the newer one is more efficient. Old 26 rows new 24 (I may have the numbers wrong).

It's 26 rows vs. 31 rows.

What Tor said. The old cooler was a 26 row cooler. The new cooler is 31 rows.

They are both excellent trans coolers, and the difference between the two, cooling temp wise, was unmeasurable according to Mark Kovalsky.

Thanks for the info everyone. I ended up ordering a True Cool tranny cooler. For $128 plus shipping, I got the same cooler as the stock V10 cooler that I have now plus all of the installation hardware that will let me hook it up in series with the existing cooler. Basically, I'll be able to double my cooling capacity for less $$ than installing the 6.0 cooler.

Thanks again.

Where do you plan on mounting the cooler?

Stewart,

To be honest, I don't know yet because I just ordered it. However, I did order the specific Superduty install kit with the cooler and since it is advertised as an add-on cooler to the stock unit, I hope the kit will provide me with some suggested mounting locations. That being said, if I had to, I'm sure I can find somewhere in front of the rad to mount the unit. I will let you know what happens.

Take lots of pictures to document your experience!

This has the ingredients to be a great tutoring thread for others who may want to do the same mod, bro!

If you decide to put it in front of the rad, throw a gauge on your coolant to monitor before and after engine temps if you can! Loaded and unloaded temps on a grade, if possible.

Will do. I have an Aeroforce scan gauge already installed, so I will be able to monitor both the before and after temps for coolant and tranny.

If you decide on placing it in front of the rad, maybe you can mock it up without hooking up the lines, that way if you find it significantly decreases airflow and raises your engine temps too much, it will be easier to remove and find a different place.
