i've been looking into upgrading to a 31 row 6.0 cooler...i just cant swing $400+ right now. my buddy just installed one on his 2001 7.3 and loves it. he says it droped the temp alot. he installed it with rubber hose and hose clamps, i would rather have a steel line or braided steel line that threads right from the trans to the cooler...so my question is has anyone used a non 6.0 cooler and installed it like i said? if so what did you use. i tow a 9000lbs camper so the bigger the better when it comes to the cooler.thanks.
Back in my Mustang street racer days I added a "stacked plate" cooler inline with the existing radiator cooler. Don't know if that's a variant to your thinking that might work for you.
Tru Cool 4739. One of the best mods I've done. Tranny temp never gets above 185F towing in mountains, on the hottest days. It was WAY cheaper than the 6.0 cooler, and install was a breeze. I put it in line with the stock cooler. I HIGHLY recommend it. PM if you have any questions.

The stock 7.3L cooler is a 28k GVW model. This Tru-Cool Max 4739 unit is a 40K model.
This cooler is meant to be an add-on cooler used in addition to your OEM cooler.
You CAN run the V-10 upgrade in place of your OEM (see related products below) and then add this Tru-Cool 4739 for even lower temps. We double up like this in our company truck. These two coolers in sequence can still pass the OEM flow rate test with flying colors.
I'm still not sure, that's why I still haven't done it!
I think we already have the largest cooler, the only option is to put the 4739 in addition to our existing cooler, but if it covers the OEM do we still get the benefits of increased cooling?
steve i did'nt relise that people were adding this tru cool 4739...i thought they were replacing what they had. two coolers does'nt sound like bad idea. hopefully someone will chime in. i think from what i'v read the v10 cooler is bigger than the 7.3 but smaller than the 6.0 cooler. i have to put a tranny temp guage on so i can see what i'm running at before i change anything.
I said the same thing, and the SCT LiveWire tuner with some fiddling of the program can log Trans Temps, but I haven't had the chance to do a long tow to test it!
a cheap method would be to find another stock cooler in your local junk yard and run it in series with your current trans cooler.
i know that my 5.4 has an auxiliary trans cooler, its not huge, but two are much better than one.
a few more options you have are to look around on summitracing.com
personally, i like the tube and fin ones better because you get more cooling capacity per square inch of cooler space.
i got one for my IROC camaro when i upgraded the motor and transmission.
it was an 8 row cooler rated at like 300,000 lbs or something rediculous like that.
i ran it after the stock radiator cooler
if i were doing it again, i'd first search junk yards though.
as long as you completely flush the old fluid out (not exactly easy mind you) its not like its a wearing part
