I have a f150 4.2 im gettin an exhaust added on but had a question on regards to the "" EXHAUST TIPS "" it can be a stupid question but need info. have been checking out several diff. Tips saw diff. sizes in length and inlet/outlet what is all the difference in all ... i dont know what really the purpose of tips is for to make louder noise or how it really works i dont want an import tuner rumble in my f150 just a nice low or even quite sound to it.. if anybody can help really appreciate it ...
im getting 3in pipes 4M CATBACK 1 GIBSON MUFFLER 3" 1IN/1OUT JUST NEED TO KNOW WHAT TIP WOULD WORK WITH THIS SETUP NO LOUD NOISE NEEDED JUST THE JOB DONE!
Exhaust tips are cosmetic Some people prefer rectangular shaped exhaust exit, some chrome, or otherwise don't care to see the steel exhaust pipe. A frivolity to me but important, I guess, to others.
usually the bigger the tip, the more noise... almost like putting a megaphone on your exhaust (so to speak). a larger outlet on your tip it won't make it 100x louder, don't get me wrong, but it'll be louder than stock pipes. I'd say at least get a 3.5" or 4"... I just threw a glasspack on with an 18" long, 3.5" outlet ss tip from magnaflow.
If you are anywhere near salt... by the water or up north with winter roads, make sure you go ss.. otherwise it'll be rotted out in a year or two. gl and post pics
is a tip seriously going to make it louder at all? cuz i run straight pipes out mine, where the 3 inch pipe just stops, no tip no nothing, and its sounds excellent, i cant see how adding a 5-9" piece of metal could ever make a difference in the sound, but hey i could totally be wrong, i know pipes out the back or a turn down will sound different quieter/louder respectively

It doesn't really make it any louder, It changes the tone!
^ yeah... it'll change how it sounds.... yeah, it may make it "louder"... again, i was not trying to give you the impression that you'll go from quiet to train running by just by swapping tips...
go ss for sure
i'd say anywheres between 3 and 4. my 3.5 is borderline too small for my taste, but the more i wake up and see it everyday, the more i'm glad i went with it. you should go and look at the different sizes, cuts, etc and see which ones you liked. I preferred the rolled edge for a cleaner look since i was running stock location. you may like something different... to each, their own... gl
ah ok i got what you mean, but if i do anything im prolly just gunna cut it into a down pipe, no need for tips that will get smashed or pinched shut when off roading! plus im not a real big fan of chrome!
THANKS AGAIN GUYS!! Cool will definetely go with the "stainless steal" jk haha i can save myself some dough.... have been checkin some out & liked the rolled edge / rectangular tips SS GIBSON'S with 4"out, looks awesome..
glad to have this forum it really makes a difference when you have people out there willing to share their knowledge & you know what say

Ditto. I'm running 3 inch straight pipe with shorty headers and a Magnaflow 4 inch tip. Stainless is the only way to go if your running the exit behind the rear tires, chrome will simpley get pitted from the rocks hitting it while driving and will rust quick.
