Transfercase flange play

The flange on the transfer case which the rear drive shaft bolts to has some play in it. I can move the flange in and out of the transfer case about 1/8". It appears to be loose when it is out, but when I push it in the 1/8" it appears to be seating itself. It move from 1/4" out and can be pushed 1/8" in. I removed the drive shaft, and the nut holding the flange on was loose so i'll replace it, but even with it tightened up there is still some play. Is this amount and type of movement normal or acceptable? Does anyone know at least if i can remove the housing that the 1/4" is drawn on without oil coming out?
